Vista Ultimate + XnView 1.91.6 = No AVI thumbnails or video

I'm just beginning to use a new laptop with Vista Ultmate
XnView 1.91.6 - English
In directories full of mpg, wmv, and avi files, mpg and wmv display with thumbnails and when executed, they play with audio and video. AVI files are named with generic "AVI" icon, when you play an AVI, there is audio and no video.

I have not downloaded any plugins... do I need to?

If it is not a plugin problem, any other ideas?

I used XnView (1.6) with WindowsXP and older laptop and had no problem with AVI.

Perhaps you have not the codec to read these AVI's
