Categories TAB in Preview pane.

I would appreciate knowing if the Categories TAB in Preview pane is actually designed for changing the Categories entries or merely for viewing settings for the current image.

I'm not too familiar with categories but here's my answer:
The 'Categories' tab is for both viewing and changing the categories.

Viewing images of one or more categories
When clicking on a specific category name, you will see all those images that are assigned to this category. By clicking on the checkbox left of the category name, you can select multiple categories and thus see all the files assigned to those categories.

Setting category
Changing/setting category is not 100% obvious. You have to drag&drop your image(s) on a specific category to assign the image(s) to it.

Another more obvious way for assigning categories is selecting the images and then using "View > Set categories...".

Good to read that the info helped. As written above Drag&Drop is not obvious, so I guess other users have similar problems. Perhaps time to write up a little longer FAQ.

Thanks to those who replied.

In the Suggestions forum I have proposed including the "Set Categories ..." menu option on the thumbnail right-button click menu where ratings and IPTC can already be set.

If the Categories TAB in the Properties Pane is for setting categories of the current image then, try as I have, I have not been able to do it.

As written above, in the category tab clicking on a specific category will show all images that belong to this category. Clicking will NOT add the selected images to the category.

Setting categories is only possible by dragging & dropping on a specific category.
