moving/reassigning thumbnails to new images location

Post by dcakovan »

HI, I am not sure of correct terms to use but here it is in my words... I tried searching the forum but have not been able to find anything (maybe I used wrong keywords).

If I am to move 100 images (in xnview) from folder A to folder B xnview recreates thumbnails again in folder B. And if I am to move them into folder C it has to recreate them again.

So now I have three sets of thumbnails created for the same images in 3 directories. That is not a problem as much as the time it takes to recreate them plus the size on disk. Some of the images I have are well over 100mb and some movies are troublesome with thumbnail creation and once they are generated it would be nice to keep them and just relocate them when those images/ movies are moved. In some case it would take a long time to show thumbnail for some movies and would crash few times so as I said once I got them created it would be very nice just to keep them and prevent recreation, long wait and possible crash.

I was testing in Adobe Bridge while back and that was the only program (that I tried) that actually moved/reassigned thumbnails to new image location. Not sure if that is the right way to say it but after moving images to new directory and browsing the new directory thumbnails would just show like they have been already generated.

Reason for asking about this is that for reorganizing I usually used one of those windows explorers with two panes but wanted to switch to xnview.

Thanks and I must say it is a wonderful program and has the greatest support.

Yeah, that would spare memory.
I hope I don't spoil your post, but it's somewhat related: Is it a bug or is there a special procedure to update the thumbnail previews on the folders' icon?
I have a few folders which change content all the time, but the thumbnails displayed on the folder's icon for preview of the content stay the same as the first time it was created, thus giving a false impression of what is the content, and weirdly neither refreshing nor "reconstructing thumbnails" ("reconstruire les vignettes" in FR version) works.

This is not a really bug but a problem for a specific use.
This is depending of which options you have checked.
If your jpg files have embedded thumbnails and you have checked the option use embedded thumbnails, in this case no problems.
If you have checked the option "...if embedded is smaller than thumbnails size" and if it's the case, you can have this problem (only if you have also checked the option : enable thumbnails caching").
This problem occur only on very few specifics cases, I had this kind of problem in the past, but now I do not know exactly without doing some new tests.

I do not mean to bump this thread but I am jut curious if this is possible or easy to implement... that is to "reassign thumbnails to new images location" (don't know the proper wording for this) so they are not recreated when you move images from one folder to another in xnview.

Support++

IMHO thumbnails creation and management needs to be addressed in some future edition of XnView. In some cases thumb creation is like lightning, but in others, it seems intolerably slow.

Another approach to this issue might be to implement "localized" thumb caches for designated folders.

Perhaps the use of a virtual folder will a good idea. On the DB, i have \\VirtualFolder\..., on one PC VirtualFolder can be one pathname, and on another PC another pathname

Hi, I am unable to find this. Is it in there or you will put something like this in?
Sorry, I did not understand how this works... will something like "virtual folder" help with thumbnails so they do not get re-created as I move files around?
Thanks.
