Slow behaviour after XnView start - folder with 'few'

hello, i know, this is known issue, and i have tryed to find any answer on this forum, but nothing worked or it was solution which i don't want - disabling such feature...

running on 3GHz processor, 7200 RPM disk, 2GiB RAM... i have folder with more than 100 images in wallpaper resolution - 1200xWhatever ... something like that. avarage image size is 130KiB (JPEG), now, there is exactly 364 files (but issue is notable even with 20 files!)...
i'm browsing directories with file browser such Total Commander or Explorer...
now, i want to start viewing image, i "run" first one in directory. xnview starts quickly and show that image - but then it starts caching (?) or do "something" - after start, i'm not able to move to next image... i have to wait ... 1 minute (only 364 files!), then xnview "unfreeze".

i had turned off cache, recognizing by extension is set, ... i have tryed to turn off loading of next image... but still - when i start xnview, i just see how disk seeking.
do not know, where to turn off this feature... and i must say, that this "precache" or whatever feature is ... ... when i wait that long minute, still, loading of next / prev image is not so quick as it should be...

please, tell me where to find answer...

i'm using "sort by type" - when i'm using xnview browser, files are sorted differently than when i'm viewing them in viewer why?!

Hello,
To speed up your xnview start into the browser mode, you have to enable the Xnview Thumbnails cache "options\thumbnails\cache\enable caching --> lossless zip".
If not, the thumbnails into your customized starting directory will be recreated each times.
By this way you should reduce the starting time from 1 minutes to ~20 seconds.
(If you still have the 1 minute, you can also try to rename (or delete) your category.db file, to see if it's better )

oops66: well, i have tryed it too, but still the same - xnview freezes, disk seeks and cpu is on 100% (with thumbnails stored!)... i have also tryed to set "compression" to "none" ... but still the same...

in browser i'm using "detail" list - no "thumbnail" ... but i'm starting directly to preview - so there is no need to create thumbnails... and turning off reading of headers also did not help at all...

Yes, in this case the cache is not needed.
Your problem is very strange, and you are on which OS and which XnView Version ?
(Did you try to erase xnview.db too, or reinstall XnView )

running on windows xp pro, and this strange behave is there... well... few years i'm using the newest version (1.93.6), i'm updating time to time. i'm using on my computer(s) application from zip file... but i have installed xnview to friends from exe installator and same problem... when updating, i remove all files from ~/Local Settings/Temp and also whole XnView directory, everytime just new clear, brand new installation... i don't think so that this is just my problem...

maybe i just use xnview bit differently (?)... browser with "detail list" not with thumbs, and running xnview directly into "preview" from explorer (or whatever) by "running" image file...

really - i see how disk is seeking when "run" any image on directory. xnview maybe looks what is on directory... but this should be fast - any list of files. xnview does more than "list files from directory" i think...

there is my ini file... maybe that few years i forgot to set something (?)...

wdolek; there are other files/directories to worry. Please take a look HERE about another database file (category.db) and the windows user directory.

bmezenga: .. umm.. i think i removed all files and records: registry records (associations and shell extension), main xnview directory on "program files", temp directory, and of course xnview directory from ~ directory... (well - have to say - i'm using single-user installation). there is no file left before i start new installation... (i was also trying to find any "category.db" file on hdd - without any match)

Could you try to disabled "read ahead"?

is there any debug build of xnview which makes some logs? i would really like to know, what xnview is making when started to "view" directly...

nope, on this case, there is just directory with .jpg files and .png files ... no subfolders. and no matter if there are only 20 .jpg files or 400 .jpeg files - lag of entire gui is there in both cases...

i must specify more this issue... if i "run" directly to view, i can zoom in / out ... and do every stuff with this one image fastly... but when i want to go to previous or next image (clicking to arrows or using pgup / pgdn) - on this, cpu is on 100% and xnview starts caching (?) directory or what... but as i told - i don't use thumbnails, i have turned "read image above" off, i turned "reading headers" off and also there is recognizing only by extension... there is no reason to lag entire gui and make cpu on 100% for one minute X-( !

hm, i think i found the reason for this odd behaviour: "Sort by Type" (ArrangeBy=4 in line 7 of xnview.ini)
when files are set to be sorted by something other than "Type", everything works fine ... at least for me

Try:

Options > BROWSER > File List > Scan File Headers in Folders
Select from drop down: Never

Program will list all files in folder but will not scan them individually.
I tried this with a folder of 5,000 + files with no delay.

Works for me!
