Sony RAW images slow and incorrect brightness

When reading ARW images taken from a Sony DSLR camera
and comparing them with the same (and simultanious) shot JPG image
the ARW image seems way to bright.

Also reading the ARW type image takes for ever,
I know it can be read much faster if I compare it being read with Adobe Photoshop on the same system .

As a happy owner of a new Sony DSLR I have to agree with rra, the ARW file looks much worse than the JPG and it takes a long time to read / process. I have uploaded one sample ARW and the corresponding JPG for testing.

If you want to view ARW in high resolution, the loading will be slow... (decoding is slow)...

OK, I can accept that, if there is no faster way, but the image still looks way worse than the JPG image (or the embedded preview). Any way this could be improved?

Do you use 'Use automatic balance' & 'Automatic brightness'?

I tried all 16 combinations of "High resolution", "Use automatic white balance", "Use camera white balance" and "Automatic brightness". Does any combination produce a good image for you?

go read up on it, if you want the raw to look exactly like the camera jpg, use the sony software.

you may be disappointed in what the raw looks like, but sorry, THAT IS what your Sony camera took. If you don't know how to take photos properly, you don't know how to set your camera so it takes correct exposures, you'll get crap. Sony does a lot of processing to BOTH their raw and jpg. See dxo's article on half-baked raws.

In your opinion, does the PNG contain enough data to make the JPG out of it? You can check the histogram, for instance.

This seems to be fixed in v1.98 beta 1, even though I could not find the fix being mentioned in the changelog.
