My large scans view blurry, clear in preview?

Post by DishXNV »

I scanned some large photos and they appear blurry in XNView and Photo Impressions but clear in the XNView preview screen and also in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Am I missing something in the settings or plug-ins, or are the photos way too big (approx 25 mb.) and how should they be changed to view correctly? I'd like to keep the original page dimensions.

Thanks from a new user.

Welcome to XnView!
Just go to "Options -> Browser -> Thumbnail" and activate the checkbox "Use high quality". This will change the decoding algorithm.

similar problem

Post by Anika »

I have a similar problem with very small bitmaps with sharp contrasts. The resize algorithm is different in brower and in file view mode:
1. In browser mode I can enlarge the image with numpad+ and the lines are still sharp.
2. If I open the image with double click and enlarge it it is very blurry. Now I open the options and close them without changing anything and the image looks like in browser with sharp corners.
Perhaps this is a bug :bug:. If it is a feature I would like to be able to swap between the two view variations with a key shortcut.
Bye,
Anika

You probably have the option "High zoom quality - Enlarge" activated. Especially when zooming into small images like icons, the icons will become very blurry. Just deactivate the "High zoom quality - Enlarge" and all should be fine.

This setting affects the Image view mode, only, not the preview.

did Anikas or my answer solve your problem?

If your problem is still there: In which Zoom levels (100%, 200%, ...) does the problem occur? In which Zoom level does it not occur?

Hallo Helmut,
thanks, this has solved my problem. But it is strange that a look into the options changes the picture like described in my second point. And a shortcut would be nice.

For toggle between normal and high quality view. But for options would also be nice.

Good idea, any suggestion for the keyboard shortcut (for toggle between normal and high quality view)? - please check the existing xnview shortcuts and this list of the requested shortcuts first.

I'll add it to the More hotkeys, shortcuts... list.

I suggest Alt+Q
Q for quality in many languages.

OK, I'll change Alt+H to Alt+Q here.
