Opening JPG files: "Format could not be determined"

Post by beavergonzalez »

:?:
I am rather new to computers.

I recently bought a used IBM ThinkPad. Other than the operating system (XP Professional), I have very little sofware.

I downloaded some pictures from the Web. I can open gif files, but I can not open jpg files using XnView.

I get the message: "Format of file <name of file> could not be determined.

Can one of the more experienced members of the newsgroup, tell me what, if any, I am doing wrong?

Thanks

Are you sure that your jpg file is correct?

originally some of the files had .art as the file extension, but now when I put the cursor over the files they say JPEG Image, and three of them say Type: File. Those two I am also not also able to open The only ones that I am able to open are the two gif files.

I must be doing something wrong. Any help will be greatly appreciate.

If your pictures are in ART format, XnView can not load them.

where did you get the files with type "File" from?

What have you tried/done so far to convert the files?

Is it possible that you've simply renamed the file and changed the extension to change the file format? This will surely not work, you have to use a graphic program to convert an image from one format to another.

Please try to provide more infos, then we might solve your problem.
