EPS file size: XnView vs. PSP

Post by Hasan »

Now one more thing please :D. I generated two images from one .eps file, one with xnview and other with Paint Shop Pro. The image generated by xnview is greater in file size (88 KB) than generated by PSP (64 KB). Image quality is almost alike.

Can you suggest anything to reduce file size of generated images ??? you know its count in bandwidth limits :) Thanks

Hi :)

I used GIF for output format. (256 colors, non-interlace, non-transparent) I'm also displaying images here for quick reference :) This is an article in our sweet language URDU :)

Thanks for the sample images. Actually I have a bit strange feeling having images with texts in this newsgroup which I (and other people) cannot read. I'm not "Anti-URDU", but I've decided to remove your images. I hope you understand.

Perhaps you can use sample images with text written in French, English, or German. Thank you!

Please give people some time to answer.

I've looked into the two images that you have provided:

Image width & height
First I compared image size (dimensions): Both images have about the same dimensions. So this cannot be the reason.

Numbers of colours used
Second I looked into the numbers of colours in the colour palette. Here is a difference: XnView uses 39 colours, whereas PSP uses only 6 grey tones.

I wanted to find out, whether the different numbers of colours is the reason and reduced the number of colours in the XnView image from 39 to 8. Then I saved the image, again. The file size went down to 77kB, which is about the same as the PSP image.

Resampling
There's still a difference of 4kBytes, but that's not much and can be explained by different resampling algorithms. When comparing the images' contents and zooming in, one can see that the images differ.

Actually, the PSP image looks a bit frayed, there is some sort of dithering which can be seen when zooming letters "l', 'p' or 'd' for example.
