Always sort folder thumbnails after name

Post by pic_viewer »

but the files after date...is there a way to do this in XnView? I have zero control about folder dates, so they never appear in a useful way. But files must be sorted by date especially if you have them from several sources. This option (default in most file managers, see TC) would be nice for me to have.

One idea would be an option to display the filelist/thumbs as two sections (or subpanels) inside the filelist itself, separated by a splitter.

Then perhaps we could also choose an option to arrange the two subpanels so that files section came "first" (i.e., at the top inside the file list, or on the left), if desired.

An additional useful option would be if we could choose to sort the file subpanel differently from the folder subpanel.

If all that were to be implemented, then controls on the mini-toolbar (or the subpanel divider, or someplace nearby) to directly hide/show the folders subpanel would be a great addition, too.

If such useful interface enhancements were to be considered, probably XnView Multi-OS (now in alpha development) would be the best place to implement them, so that all future users would benefit.

Not likely soon, though.

JFC, I am under the impression that you did not understand what I was talking about.

And hijacking my simple question/suggestion thread with multiple strange proposals that will most probably never be implemented is rude, to say the least.

TC option…

Post by Clo »

 pic_viewer

:) Hello !

• I guess that you mean the TC option to sort directories "Always by name" or "Like files",
using the bistable command #2012.
- There is a sub-option about the dir. names having an "extension" xxx.yyy
• I think that John got this pretty well as a long while TC user, but he tries to bring more to your suggestion,
and proposes an important improvement -supposing that the option to sort the folders IS already implemented…

So sorry... I did not mean to hijack your thread.

My response was also about arranging/sorting files and folders, but from a broader perspective attempting to cover all circumstances of sorting and arranging, of which your request is just one specific case. As a developer myself, I'm always thinking to generalize specific/isolated requirements (such as yours) toward more inclusive implementations.

Mr. Moderator: please split my suggestion from this thread to another one if it is inappropriate here.

Hello Claude,

Yes.

I have no clue what that is. In TC you go to Configuration, Options, Display, Sorting Directories. Note that this option defaults to 'Always by name' as far as I can think back (more than 10 years). By time never made sense for me. A good example is WinSCP, where the author refuses to implement this feature, leaving you with a un-symmetrical view of your local and remote (server) dir...fully confusing and of no help at all...but I get off track here...

I don't want to change the names of all my sub dirs just to get a functionality that should have been there from the beginning (IMHO).

JFC, sorry if I came along too harsh. I was just disappointed because your post made my small request vanish into lots of other things so it does not get the needed attention anymore.

I have a tendency to follow tangents "to their inevitable conclusions and beyond" to paraphrase Toy Story. My apologies again.

Hi,

Iam sorry to reopen this thread after such a long time, but I started using XnView just a few weeks ago and it has all functionality that I ever thought of. But I also use the "sort by date" option pretty often and it makes no sense to have the folders sorted by date as well. Has there been any changes that would open up solutions for that request?

Regards,

Zusan

:) Hello ! Welcome aboard !

• As far as I see, nope…  :|
- The only way is to use Total Commander (or maybe some other file manager) to get different sortings
for the folders and the files…
• BTW : There is a kind of partnership between these two softs, you can use XnView as running in the background and get thumb nails in panes and images in the TC “Lister” quick viewer…

 Kind regards,
Claude
