How can I generate a date out of the file name or the IPTC date: for example 970604.jpg -> "04.06.07" oder 19970604 -> "04.06.07" ?

Welcome to the XnView forum, Gunter! Do I get you right: You want to have the date in the added text?

You can achieve this using the "Insert >>" button in the dialog "Add text". There you have many variables available including IPTC date and file date.

Date format variables
If you want to change the format of a date, you can use the date format variables. You can see all date format variables available in "Insert >> Date format variables >". Make sure you insert the date variable first and then add the desired date format variables. Alternatively, you can type in the format variables yourself, e.g. for getting "04.06.07" out of the file date you would use <Modified Date [d.m.y]>.
