File date not updating

Post by Ty »

xnView 1.95.4 on XP SP2:

When using "Add text" to add some text, and then saving the PNG file, the date of the file is NOT changed. I have about 80 examples.

Do you have checked 'keep original date"?

1. The "Add Text" dialog box does offer a "keep original date" option, so I did not set it there.

2. I can find nothing in Tools...Options....General or ...System Integration that offers such a choice.

3. The only place to set that option ("keep original date") seems to be on the Tools....Batch Processing dialog box. And NO, it is not checked/yes there.

I have run another test, confirming that the "keep original date" in Tools...Batch Processing is NOT checked, and the result is the same: the file date remains what it was.

I hope this is helpful info.

What about Tools » Options... » General » File Operations » Keep date/time for saving?

Ah yes, there it is. Sure enough, "Keep date/time for saving" is checked.

So good, the program is behaving as it is told.

However, I now have two design comments/requests:

1. The language is not good. Perhaps in French or other languages the meaning is clear, but it is not clear in English. I suggest it be changed to:

When saving changed files, do not change file date/time stamp.

or

Do not change file date/time stamp when saving changed files.

2. This option should NOT be the default. (In my opinion, this option should not even exist; it seems to violate some sense of file information rules of integrity. But if you are going to have such an option, then at least make it NOT the normal case.)

Thanks for comments/feedback/help, Pierre and XnTriq.

  1. “Do not change file date/time stamp when saving files”
  2. I agree that it shouldn't be activated by default.
FYI: There's also a setting to Keep original date/time attributes for Rotation in Tools » Options... » Browser » Misc..

Based on XnTriq's comments and observations, I think that the text should be "Keep original date/time attributes" so as to agree with the same question/option in Tools » Options... » Browser » Misc...

That language is a little better than what I suggested, I think, and it would be best to use the same exact language in both places.

Do you have a shorter sentence?
[*]I agree that it shouldn't be activated by default.[/list]FYI: There's also a setting to Keep original date/time attributes for Rotation in Tools » Options... » Browser » Misc..
But it's not activated by default

Okay, then there is no problem (except with the language).

However, please confirm--again?--that all defaults for "do not change date/time stamp" functions are NO. I can't imagine that I would have ever changed this, but the one in "Tools » Options... » General » File Operations" was YES.

It could have been my mistake.
