Hi xnview,

I am using your amasing program since several years already and have always been absolutely happy with it.
Thanks a lot to you for providing such a great tool as freeware for us!
btw - the "latest" changes in the colormanagement handling are also absolutely great!

I have been starting to think about rating and color labels and came accross the fact, which had been discussed here already
in some threads, that XNView currently doesn't store ratings & labels in the image file itself but in the db "onlY".
I read at another place, that you plan to implement capabilities to store rating (and hopefully labels as well)
in the standard XMP format & area within the next version(s)!?

Will you also add capability of reading existing rating & label out of XMP data and transfer to XNView db? e.g. when they are
written by other programs (of course only in case of following some standards).

Have you already received XMP templates, written from other programs as requested before?
If not, here is what e.g. FastPictureViewer writes in the Lightroom/IDimager settings or format (I guess this should be
Adobe conform!?) to an image, when rating and labeling it:

Windows Vista has a new format to show the rating for all files as 5 stars.
Nikon ViewNX is supporting the new Vista feature.

It would be great, if XnView could read and write the rating in the same way as Vista is doing it.

+1. Vista is using XMP. If you need the samples, please let me know.

Vista rating support (compatibility) is most important IMO, because it's Operating system - system. I know there are other OSs (Win XP, 98, Linux...), but these don't have any rating system (AFAIK).

BTW - if you add a Vista rating (sometime), the old files with xnview rating only will be automatically converted - or there will be a feature / option to manually change/add Vista rating?

Edit: Any rating system is (quite) useless without integration in search and (nonexistent) quick search and quick filter. "Sort by rating" is the only workaround I know.

I've read through this topic, and agree with the feature request: I would also like to be able to export the rating in a IPTC ApplicationRecord tag (or at least in XMP)

I would suggest NOT to use keywords, but a field which is mostly not used, some suggested "Urgency" (TagID 10), why not, altough it is meant from 1 to 9. Ideally, it could be an advanced option: choosing the tag where to store this info

But the best would be to use the XMP rating tag used by MS and Adobe!

The advantage of using a IPTC flag is the possiblity to easier read it as XMP e.g for web gallery, when the mapping ID can be chosen (as it is in piwigo.org)

I don't care where the codes are stored. Putting them in the image does seem best.
But I would like to be able to assign different names to the ratings and color lables. And I'd like to be able to store these names in the folder with the pictures so that I can have different names for different folders.
For instance, one folder might have priorities assigned to each color label. Another folder might have a G, PG, R assigned to each picture.
I store totally different types of pictures or movies in different folders. So it is logical to want different names assigned to each label. Storing this info in the folder would make it easy for XnView to open the file or DB with the correct name for the rating or color.

And thanks for XnView. I've used it for many years. And I'm currently using it on both Vista and Linux.

Hello, xnview,
I am a sports photographer and use the 5D Mark III's Rate button to choose what shots are the best. It would be very helpful if xnview had the option of using Windows Vista's rating system so that
1) Photos could be sorted by (existing) rating for easy batch IPTC data editing, renaming, etc.
2) Unrated photos could be easily rated for quick selection and use in other programs
This feature would make xnview ideal for sports photogs who need to do batch IPTC data like captions, tags, categories, etc.
Do you have an update for this feature request?
