IMO every program that's as powerful and feature-packed as XnView should come with customizable toolbars.
It would have been a lot harder for me to learn Photoshop, if it hadn't been for PhotoBars (part of the Extensis PhotoTools plug-in suite).

When I had to decide between...
  • ... a toolbar with my favorite skin (Mezich) but a limited number of commands to choose from or...
... a toolbar with (not quite as purdy looking) buttons for all the commands I need on a regular basis,...
... I reluctantly went for the latter and continued to extend my own B/W 16²px theme.

I don't blame Yuri and the other authors of original skins. It's a lot of work to find meaningful symbols for 150+ commands.
For themes like Crystal, Gnome & Tango at least some extra icons can be picked from repositories of premade stuff.

Unfortunately we don't have any hard numbers on how many users actually add/remove/rearrange buttons on XnView's toolbar.
I'm not a big fan of forum polls, but in cases like this starting one could yield interesting results.

Poll needed---

:) Hello W. !
…I don't blame Yuri and the other authors of original skins. It's a lot of work to find meaningful symbols for 150+ commands.
• I don't either, but notice that not even a few - among the supposed most needed- have been offered with the skins…
- And it's still possible to find patterns, just needs more fish at lunch ! :D
…Unfortunately we don't have any hard numbers on how many users actually add/remove/rearrange buttons on XnView's toolbar.
• This feature isn't well known by many users, and alas its config. box is still a bit lame…
- It's explained as so well as possible in our Manual, but that doesn't fix the bugs and fill in the lacunaæ… :|
- For instance, the classic CD <Directory> command is not supported still, despite several requests…
It should be very useful in the browser…
- One can start any application from a button, but it's still impossible
to set a custom info-text for it…and same for other buttons.
…I'm not a big fan of forum polls, but in cases like this starting one could yield interesting results.
• I agree totally ! It should be nice to set a list of the most wanted commands in such a poll,
as AND choice lines (tick-boxes), including indeed a “wildcard” empty icon
with the same size and (when needed) BG style¦colours…
{OT}
• We''ll have cheap firewood this year, regarding all broken trees in our forest…
…Hopefully everyone in the Charries/Lavielle family is doing well.
• “Charries” alone now… Mr. Henri is away since last June… {/OT}

Let's get ahead !

:) Hello W. !

• Good job, as usual… Just some remarks :

1. The numbering of the main.bmp patterns starts from “0” up to “44”, it's the way the computers count,
and it's set in the xxxx.bar files, so we might stick to, in order to avoid confusions…

2. The browser.bmp contains 11 patterns. I drew a full matching one for my skin “Cathy”,
but I persist in claiming that such a 16² size is too small nowadays, and doesn't allow to draw nice images.

3. At least, the jpgbar.bmp might be a mandatory part of every skin… Easier to draw (32²), but that even dimension
leads still to 2-pixel thick axis, rather inconvenient to get nice balanced patterns.

4. About the patterns for commands else than the ones of the main bitmap, a poll could define the “head-wagon”,
I mean the most needed ones… Maybe asking for a dozen to choose at least - that seems a reasonable amount.
- And of course, always a skin wildcard (empty, but with BG-colours-frame),
plus a couple of empty 8 BPP and 32 BPP wildcards (same size only).

• I assume that such a poll could be started in the Customization section, with links to here, for instance ?

I didn't post the list to provide a template for skin.bmp or tool.bar files.
It's meant as a reference for icon designers as well as users, so everyone can gain an overview of all available commands, which ones are already covered by the bitmaps and how many are not.
Clo wrote:2. The browser.bmp contains 11 patterns.
Only three (New Folder, Rename, Delete) of the commands from the small Browser toolbar can be appended to the Basic, View or the main Browser toolbar. The rest cannot be added:
  1. Up one level
  2. Favourites
  3. View as
  4. Refresh
  5. Sort by
  6. Filter
  7. Back
  8. Forward

Yes, that's what I had in mind.
