TWAIN/WIA issues

So I choose the WIA option in the TWAIN source box and I get "Acquire return failed" or something like that.
If I choose the options that start HP-Photosmart etc that actually names my printer, it goes through the HP software. The whole reason I'm using XnView is so I don't have to do that because HP's software SUCKS. It has resolution problems and it's impossible to get a small file size out of their stupid scanning software.

So if someone can please give me a suggestion for how I can use XnView to import using the scanner but bypassing the HP software?

Not easy, TWAIN interface use driver for your scan, so HP software
