Hi there,
couldnt find any discussion about this:
Is it possible to add support for offline archives (or offline storage/offline folders)? At work I use an old version of FotoStation, and it's got this great feature. It works like this:
1. insert a CD or DVD with images (or even a good old diskette)
2. let the program scan through the CD/DVD
3. the program creates thumbnails and metadata in a special folder, called "offline images" or something similar
4. remove CD/DVD
5. now you can search in the offline-folder, just as usual. When opening the images, the program tells you which CD/DVD its on, i.e. "Please insert CD "My images 2003". When doing so, it works as usual.
This way, you don't have to put all your images on a harddrive, you can backup it all and still search, without always inserting the cd's. And you can search through many cd's or just one specific. What do you thing? I do understand that this feature might be on the bottom of the "to-do"-list, but it would be great! Don't know, but if it works, it could even include USB-drives, external HDs and other storage solutions.
PS. Of course, you wouldn't be able to SAVE but thats not the point with this feature.
Thanks for XN view /Troken

Re: Support for offline archives
Bump.
Any plans on something for this? I want to raise the question again, because I just received 15 CD's with royalty free images and it would be convenient to use such a feature.
Any thoughts from other users? Is this "old-fashioned tech", to use offline material such as CD's?
I imagine that there are tonnes of CD's and DVD's out there - just waiting to be thumbnailed and tagged. Wouldn't it be nice to have XnView search through all your 100 CD's in just a couple of seconds?
And XnView would be able to search through all the back-ups out there! Even write disabled floppy discs and SD-cards etc.
The feature might attract many new users
