Ctrl+V does not import from clipboard

Post by bugkiller »

Hello all,

XnView works very fine for me, but importing from clipboard only works from the menu, not by pressing Ctrl+V.

Will this be fixed soon?

It's now Ctrl+Shift+V

I have tried Ctrl+Shift+V before, but in XnView 1.66 nothing happens.

Hi Pierre,

this does not work too. And I'm sure you know, that it's a very bad idea, to change well known shortcuts and I recommend to go back to CTRL+V.

In XnView 1.66, CTRL+SHIFT+V imports the image contained in the clipboard. Though there is a known bug with function keys and keyboard shortcuts, they only work if the input focus is in the file/image area of the browser.

I don't think that CTRL+V pressed in the browser should import an image:
Generally, CTRL+V is for pasting the contents of the clipboard to the current application. But in the browser, we are working with files - not necessarily image files and not at all with image contents. So if the clipboard contains a file, the file should be pasted by pressing CTRL+V (similar to MS Explorer). If the clipboard does not contain a file (e.g. contains the contents of an image), nothing should happen.

Why nothing? If there is a file in clipboard, Ctrl+V should "paste" it (copy or move). If there is an image, so XnView should create a new image with clipboard contents, like previous versions of XnView.

But I'm confused. What Ctrl+V and Ctrl+Shift+V are supposed to do?

I have double-checked the CTRL+SHIFT+V key combination:
Ctrl+Shift+V is a XnView 1.67 feature and not supported by XnView 1.66.

The idea with CTRL+V and CTRL+SHIFT+V originated from the "Copy" functionality: You can copy a file to the clipboard using CTRL+C. Or you can copy the content of a file (image content) by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+C.
So it seems naturally to have the same for pasting. But when pasting, XnView could decided what to import/what to do by the type of content.
So perhaps there is really no need to differentiate between pasting a file (copying) and importing it. Just one key combination for importing anything that is in the clipboard sounds simple.
Other comments? Ideas?
