Photo Organization - Category

Post by pc001 »

After I categorize the photos and rated them, can these cateogrization and rating be saved in case the computer crash and I have to recategorize them again?

BTW, I searched this site, and find posting about category.db, however, I searched my C: and can not locate any file by that name. I do have a XnView.db, is this something new now to replace category.db?

Pierre, thanks for trying to help, but they are not in the same folder, in fact, I searched thru the entire c: dirve and another drive where I designated the cache folder, it is not there. Only xnview.db is there.

Perhaps I should explained what I have done. By default, the cache option is "user". So, I thought if I change that to define a customized folder, it will be more efficient. So, I did that, it created a 32MB xnview.db file within the newly customized folder. Nothing else happen. I was trying to find a way to backup my category and corresponding pictures so that in case my computer crash, I need to reinstall xnview, I don't loose all the info and have to re-rate and categorize them. Does backuping xnview.db and category.db do what I want? If so, how can I find category.db?

Thanks again.

Yes, but it's strange that you have no category.db. By default this file is in ".../Application Data/XnView/"

I want to do the same thing, but for a change I'm missing xnview.db?! I have category.db in the Application Data folder, but there is no xnview.db. There is also no xnview.db in the program directory. I recently tried to move my categories to a new installation and copied everything from the Application Data folder but it did not work. :( I did not even have the correct category names. Any ideas?

Oh, my old installation (from which I want to backup) is 1.96.1 on WinXP. The new installation is 1.96.2 on Vista. Err, wait a second, I just remembered that I manually changed the xnview.db to another folder. I thought it's only for thumbnails but now I pressume there is a lot more in it? I'll try again now including xnview.db.

I've now copied category.db, xnview.db, xnview.ini and got it finally to work. What I find strange is that in my Vista installation I have these files in Users\Appdata\Roaming\XnView and in Users\Appdata\Local\Virtual Store\Program Files (x86)\XnView.

While the xnview.db (thumbnail cache) seemed to work when copied into the first folder (probably because I set thumbnail cache to "User") the category.db and xnview.ini only worked after I copied them into the latter directory. It's fine now, but still... what about that category.db in the "Roaming" directory?

/edit:
I'm puzzled, I know deleted the XnView folder in the "Local" directory (because the category.db's timestamp did not change) and it still works fine. It hasn't been recreated either. Maybe I confused the folders beforehand.

/edit^2:
Ok, seems the "Virtual Store" folder holds the files that would have been written into the "Program files" folder (which is now forbidden). So it seems at some point XnView created a category.db in the actuall install path. Can you point out the differences between these two files?

Well, I am even more confused than you and scared to do something stupid. I went to user folder and found there is a folder named xnview and low and behold, I found the xnview.db, category.db and xnview.ini within that folder! However, the xnview.db within that folder was dated 3days ago probably around that time was when I moved the cache into another drive. Even the cache is moved, the older copy remain. Does that mean xnView is grabbing some old cache info from the user directory and creating anything new from the new drive directory? All kinds of question, no answer from the official people here?

fYI I did go ahead with remapping the cache, and now everything is on the user folder. Now I just need to back up the user folder and it should be fine.
