Vista & renaming files

Post by delta »

Argh, Windows Vista is driving me crazy. I have an external hard disk and I'd like to rename files with XnView. There seems to be no way other than starting XnView as admin? I tried to change the owner of the hard disk to my vista account I also granted myself full access and it still doens't work. What else can I do?! (I use VirtuaWin, a multiple desktop app which can't hide programs that are started as admin, that's why I'd like to avoid this.)

And btw... when I change access rights Vista does something with every single file on disk (which takes very long for a 1TB hd). So I can't just say the whole disk belongs to me but it must be repeated (though automatically) for every single file? And if I use my external hd with another computer (gee, that's what external hds are for in the first place) and copy something on disk then back under Vista I have files that I own and files that I don't own? And there is no convienient way of telling which? And how would I repair it without ...well... writing down the names of the new folders and manually change the ownership?

Dunno, I'm getting the feeling Vista is half-baked crap. There seems to be no way to do it right. Please help me. :(

:) Hello !

• No Vista here (God thank !) but according to that I heard in the Total Commander fora…
… I would bet (one of )my boots that your XnView is installed in …\Program Files\… were one cannot do anything, even as Admin. You must get so-called “Elevated rights”.
- The author of Total Commander has reset the default location as X:\Tcmd (or so),
like it was on the Win 3.1 era for that reason.
• I think that you might try to install XnView manually from the ZIP package, just copying the <XnView> folder from the ZIP onto the root of your local hard disk, delete the Pocket.xnp file from the <AddOn> sub-folder if present, then start the programme and set the settings saving as an INI file in the programme directory…
- Hoping it helps,

Yes, you are right, it's actually installed in "Program Files (x86)". Btw, I also have Total Commander which works (from "Programm Files") at least in that case. I'm somewhat annoyed that Vista forces you to such workarounds. *sigh* I think for the time being I will start XnView as admin. Vista now finally makes me start with Linux - so something good comes from it after all. ;) When Vista first came out I had this feeling that I'm out of the target group. It started with XP but I could still taylor it to my needs. Now I just don't see the point anymore for going through all this hassle, especially since the next Windows version will probably be worse again. I guess MS just doesn't expect their customers to use crazy hacking software like Total Commander.

Anyway, I'm still open to alternative suggestions how to solve the original problem.
