I've always had this problem with XnView for years. I always anticipated the problem to be fixed whenever I downloaded a new version. However, it hasn't.
Therefore I just had to sign up and report this annoying bug.
Whenever I open an image from a folder with lot of images (for example 200 or even less depending on their sizes), the image opens without a problem. However, when I try to browse to the next image, I get a very long freeze lasting many seconds or even maybe up to a minute if the folder contains a lot of images. This freeze also occurs if I try to close XnView instead of browsing. I get a long freeze before the program closes.
I have enabled caching but this doesn't help. If I close the image and open again, it takes the same amount of time to begin browsing.
Oh, and while I am here I just want to suggest another thing:
The keyboard/mouse settings seem to be opposite by default to what they should be to me. Of course this is a personal preference, but comparing the keys with other programs, it makes sense to use the following:
Space: Go to next picture (this one isn't that important, starting slide is fine too)
Cursor Left/Right: Previous/Next file
Cursor Up/Down: Previous/Next frame
Left Button: Move picture
Right Button: Make selection
Mouse wheel: Zoom
Left Button use in selection: Move selection

Sorry I don't exactly know what you're asking me. My settings are default in XnView.
Only thing I have changed are the keyboard binds to the ones I listed above. And also, I chose not to automaitcally play audio and video files. I haven't touched anything else.

Your suggestion kind of worked as I didn't experience the freezes. However, when I double click on an image in windows explorer, XnView opens in browser mode. This is not what I wanted. I want to open the image in normal mode. That is a must. I want to use windows explorer as my image browser but want to open image in xnview normal mode with I double click it.

and everything works fine now. No feezes when I browse.

Here is something mind boggling. I changed settings back to how they were when I was getting freezes, and now I'm not getting the freeze. I tried it with a folder with 1000 files and no freezes.
So how is this fixed? I think there is a bug in xnview somewhere and it fixed the problem when I changed one of those settings and then changed them back to default. In cases like this Pierre usually recommends removing the configuration file (%ProgramFiles%\XnView\xnview.ini or %AppData%\xnview.ini) to ensure that any incompatible/deprecated settings left behind by earlier version won't be carried over to newer ones.

I copied my old ini file to my AppData\Roaming\XnView folder and I get the freeze again. Looks like I had been using an old ini file when I installed new version of Xnview. I wanted to preserve my settings instead of having to go through setting everything up again.

So what does this line do that gave me the freezes for all these months or years. And how come it wasn't reported here before? I tried searching but couldn't see anyone else having the same problem... unless it was reported in different way or I didn't look hard enough!
I'm guessing it's something to do with arranging files in some sort of order (maybe 1 = name, ..., 4 = type), after looking at the responses I'm getting.
But why is XnView sorting files when I have built-in explorer disabled. And secondly, what if someone really did want to sort files by "type", why is this problematic for XnView?

OK, thanks. I see that it had been a common issue since a very long time, since XP days. But I guess it still hasn't been fixed. Maybe 'sort by type' should just be removed and replaced with only 'sort by extension'. I can see why there is a freeze when using "sort by type" because the program has to scan the headers of every file which can take some time, whereas with "sort by extension" it just scans the extension.
But in my case, I didn't even know I had set the 'sort by Type" option, and neither did I know there was a problem with it. I understand the issue better now.
Maybe XnView can sort by Type in the background and sorting "incrementally" while allowing the user continue using the program. Similar to how Windows displays results when you search for a file. It continues to scan for files and the user can also carry on doing what he/she wants.
