Description or Comments??

I want to be able to name old family pictures (pre digital camera's) family 01, family 02 and so on. But I also need to be able to store a description of who's in the picture. This seems possible:
From XnView / Descriptions.
From Win Explorer: Comments.
But neither show in the other.
What is the best method to store a description of who's in the picture that will show both in XnView, Win Explorer and any other program I may use.

Note: Using WinXp but soon to migrate to Win7
