Delete button/icon on image view

Post by philg »

When I am in browser view, I have a Delete button (the red X) to delete the currently selected image

BUT when I open an image, the only way I can see to delete the current image is menu File.Delete - I can't see a delete icon anywhere

My wife needs things to be REALLY simple (she's brand new to computers AND to Windows) - I know it sounds trivial, but a delete button/icon on image view would be VERY helpful

Have I missed an option somewhere?

Thanks

You / your wife can use the "Del" key to delete an image in view mode. Alternatively, you can add the "Delete" button in the toolbar by customizing your toolbar:

1.) Select menu "Tools > Options"
2.) Switch to category "Interface > Toolbar"
3.) You want to modify the Toolbar in View mode, so you select button "View". The icons of the toolbar in View mode are shown.
4.) Select button "Append" to append a dummy button (separator). In the next steps the properties of the dummy button will be refined.
5.) In the dropdown list "Command" you select the command of your choice, in your case it's "cmd_Delete". After choosing, you will see a big red cross as icon.
6.) Modify the position of your new toolbar button using the left/right buttons (< >).
7.) If everything is o.k. and as desired, confirm the options dialog with "OK" button.
Done.

EDIT:
For a reason I don't know (bug?) you cannot add the delete button in the toolbar. See topic "1.97: Cannot add 'Delete' button in toolbar".

Thanks (and thanks for realising that there may be a bug)

If I go through your process but then go BACK afterwards, the icon I added that is now a seperator has NO command associated with it

If I change that to be cmd_Delete (again) but this time specify an icon (I just chose one at random from xmview.exe then it DOES appear as a button on the toolbar

All I need to do know is find that red "X" icon :)

Thank you for your feedback. The icon graphics are not embedded in xnview.exe but stored as bitmap files in subfolder "skins" (C:\Program Files\XnView\skins\...). But you cannot specify bitmap files for getting icon graphic.

But you cannot specify bitmap files for getting icon graphic.
But you CAN specify an icon file for the button image! For the viewer and the browser main toolbar, the icon you select should be 24x24.

There are lots of good-looking icons online... or you can create your own. One approach would be:
  • · Use XnView to capture a screen that contains an image you want to make into an icon.
    · Place a 24x24 selection rectangle around the part that will be the icon.
    · Select Edit->Crop
    · Select File->Save As
    · Change "Save as type:" to "ICO - Windows Icon"
    · Name the file and save it.
    · Then, in your Options->Toolbar definition panel, reference the new icon file for the Delete button image!
Or you could use this little icon. (right-click on the text and choose "Save Link As...")

I used Winmine.exe to get me a nice icon of a mine!
