Hi,

A lot of german newspapers have got a problem: there are using Windows (of course thats the biggest problem). If a Mac- or Linux-user sends them pictures the "umlaute" (for example: äüöß) disappear.

The reason is a different Character Set (German: Zeichensatz): ISO/IEC 8859-1 , MacOs, UTF8 or ASCII.

So, is it possible to make a setting in the iptc, to set wich character set is on the other side (recipients)???

ASCII, as I know from struggling with Mac-annotated files in Gwenview for Linux, is the standard for IPTC annotations. Unfortunately, IPTC tags are so brief, and unlike with EXIF or XML, they still haven't quite figured out a way to indicate or declare the "type" of ASCII used when tagging an image file, so far as I've been able to tell. Simplest form: ASCII doesn't do diacriticals very well on the same platform, much less across three, so the best way to go about it, and you can pass this on to your journalist/editor friends, is the old Usenet way: Doppelpunkte für Umlaute (colons for umlauts). Anyone reading them should be able to tell what's meant by them. One usually doesn't find colons stuck in the middle of zusammengesetzt hauptwörte, after all.

And for other punctuation unique to German, I suggest some time-honoured reversions (double-s or sz for the scharfe-s, for instance).

Thank you for your response. My pictures are placed in large image databases. Your solution would mean that I re-educate hundreds of editors. Because, they are looking for "Öl" and not for "O:l" or "Oel"....
