Nobody mentioned the really small A43 Freeware file manager.
Invoke the second file window with F7 and click "FM Extra" button.

But TC rocks!

A43 has no tab support, that's why it hasn't been mentioned I think.
Ah, well, it fits into JohnFredC's collection of dual pane managers of course and should definetely not be missed, right.

I use a program not yet mentioned: WinNC.net. It has tabs for my favourite folders, icons for my favourite programs, can filter within copy or move, synchronize, compare folders, compress/decompress files, show picture thumbs, show/play media files, and even burn CDs and DVDs.
Servant Salamander I have tried some years ago, but finally stayed at WinNC.

It´s probably the best filemanager in Windows. Very easy of use,very powerfull and for that price, what more can we ask for?

The forum is dead if you ask me. One posting every month or so and the last answer from developer from is dated 11/2005.
The first impression of support could not be worse. Looks like i am not the only one:

From a resource friendlyness point of view, after a bit more candidates:

Group A (in the 1.5-3MB of vMemory)
New winner, so far: 7-zip own Browser at 1.6MB (dual pane type)...
Then: Windows Commander (3.53 tested), ZBrowse (winner with treeview) and Servant Salamander way behind at about 3MB.

Group B (about 4-5MB of vMemory)
xplorer2, Total Commander, XYplorer and ExplorerXP are very close in that order. A43 is just out of this at 6-7MB...

I won't test Group C (aka: bloated) which probably has a lot of candidates...
edit: I just tried CubicExplorer... and it clearly enters that category, thanks to its 15MB in memory and eye-candy/animated-menu design.

PS: the ultimate resource friendly browser is probably to use the menu in alternate shells like bblean, litestep... on folders&files.

well, i understand your point but the first requisite for me is FREEWARE software.

TotalCommander in shareware. so, game over.... i'll stay with CubicExplorer which is freeware and from my personal point of view is better than TotalCommander.

if you prefer TotalCommander it's ok for me. i don't wanna force you to change.

- I got it, thank you, and first had a look in the content about language files…

HORROR ! DLLs ! It's enough here still - hoping this shall be changed soon in XnView !

- Then, a glance inside the French one indeed, the mania of the translator
¤ Not a wonder… A few samples :

"Le renommage…" = non-existent in French
"…le programme va etre quitté" = le programme va être fermé
"Attention - Données-poubelles r la fin du fichier Zip!" = ??? Pure gobbledegook, nonsense.
- Just for the first 2 tens of lines in the strings…
- Default English is not better, one example : "Sort on name" (!). I hope that German is good for you…

- Maybe I'ld give a try as soon as I'ld have a correct French GUI (if I find time enough to waste at this…)
- The programme seems oversized, the archive is "only" 6.4 MiB ( TC : 2 MiB) and the data interchange between five EXEs isn't favourable to a high execution speed, it seems too.

- It might be so powerful, though, and not the last in the quality ¦ utility list, after some fixes…

Hi there,
I am not "married" with WinNC. It's very slow at startup especially within a network, the support is very slow, the German translation is quite ok.
My search for a good file manager ended some years ago. There may be much better programs meanwhile that I have not checked yet. It's great that you find and test all these programs. It would be helpful if there could be at the end a table with the programs and their features.

Im currently testing Q-dir (freeware), with 4 panes, check the screenshot:

v4.00 has been released today:

• Adjustments and improvements for a better functionality under Windows-7/Vista.
• Optimization at the menu, favorites, loupe, preview ... .
• Folder tabs fox each Q-View and save options.
• Bugfix in relative paths for program starts.
• Various speed optimizations, such as for example when you start Q-Dir.
• Ctrl+T is now for new tabs, and Ctrl+E to toggle tree view.

Well... Cubic Explorer is promising, but it only does one file panel, my (and others') chief complaint about MS Explorer. It does have tabs, but there are add-ins to Explorer itself that do tabs. Still, CE is in early development, so maybe additional file panels will be implemented. It does have a "drop box" -style file collector, which is useful.

Q-Dir does 4 Explorers in one window and offers quite a bit of control over how they are displayed and arranged.

it's a matter of tastes.

i prefer a multitab phylosophy rather than a dual pane phylosophy

however CubicExlorer in a near future will have a dual pane option as well

i will never use that option, i prefer multitab but i understand some user woul like to have that feature

Take a look at UnrealCommander.
The best non TC file manager, IMHO.
