XnView 1.97 + ffdshow tryouts rev3222
-> set xnview.exe to the list in "Don't use ffdshow in" in ffdshow preferences (direct show control)
-> open AVI file (DivX 5 in my case) in xnview
-> exit xnview
-> open taskmanager
=> xnview.exe still running
Doing this several times gives you many many running/hanging xnview.exe processes!
Allowing xnview to use ffdshow doesn't give this problem!
Not sure if this is a ffdshow or xnview bug ...

you mean ffdshow right? which version?
maybe you can try my settings too: ffdshow.reg ?
here my xnview settings: xnview.ini
ffdshow is the only codec on my windows xp sp3. no other 3rd party codecs or splitters installed!
strange is that ffdshow obviously still is in use when opening an avi (DivX 5 at least) in xnview (even with xnview.exe on the ffdshow blacklist)!?

Good question. So I've tried Windows Media Player 11 (blacklisted in ffdshow) -> crash in quartz.dll (this is the DivX decoder in Windows XP I think). Obviously that's the reason of XnView hanging I guess!? Did you try this on Windows XP SP3 with Media Player 11 (and all latest Windows Updates)?

Good question. So I've tried Windows Media Player 11 (blacklisted in ffdshow) -> crash in quartz.dll (this is the DivX decoder in Windows XP I think). Obviously that's the reason of XnView hanging I guess!? Did you try this on Windows XP SP3 with Media Player 11 (and all latest Windows Updates)?
No i have only MediaPlayer9...

I've tried on a clean XP SP3 + WM11 + all fix, and i don't have crash. WM11 can't play the file.
Perhaps you have installed another codec??
You can try GSpot or AVIcodec (
http://avicodec.free.fr/ftp/AVIcodec_1.2_b106.exe ) on your mp4

No. But I just found the reason of the crash in WMP11:
I had "Qualitymode" enabled in it (instead of "Overlay").
See
http://www.onlinehowto.net/tuts_pic/400 ... verlay.jpg
So with the default overlay mode it doesn't crash anymore. But: The "XnView.exe remaining in taskmanager" problem isn't gone. Same as before

But if you have a codec. On my clean XP, the avi can't be opened by XnView...

These are the codecs I have: codecs.png
You see, besides ffdshow there are only LAME and AC3 ACM codecs. And I've changed the integrated l3codeca.acm into l3codecp.acm (Professional Fraunhofer MP3 encoder). But these shouldn't be related to this issue at all.
And I have Media Player Classic Homecinema 1.3.1249.0 installed too. Don't know if that one installs some splitters/codecs ...
When playing that AVi in WMP11 without ffdshow I can't see which codec is in use:
Properties:
Audiocodec: MPEG Layer-3 Decoder
Videocodec: -

Yeah, I have video too. But you're right, obviously it shouldn't:

What version number is your WMP11? Mine is 11.0.5721.5268!
Also that quartz.dll crash I had refers to DirectX in some way I think. I have that Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtimes (August 2009) installed here too.

Also, could you add support in XnView to view the used filter(s) - in the contextmenu for example?
