move thumbnails around like in WIndows Desktop
Can you add the ability to move thumbnails around like in the WIndows desktop and like in paperport.
Re: move thumbnails around like in WIndows Desktop
You means change the order of thumbnails?
Pierre.

Do you mean a 'disable auto-arrange' feature?JODWYER wrote:Can you add the ability to move thumbnails around like in the WIndows desktop and like in paperport.
Like in Win Explorer (xp,vista):

Microsoft removed this lovely feature in Windows 7 folders but kept it in Win 7 desktop. Luckily for Win 7 users a Mr. Ramesh Srinivasan made a reg hack (full-row select) that can get it back in Win 7 again.
The only app I have seen it in outside of Win Explorer is Explorer++ :

I much prefer XYplorer or xplorer2 over the inferior Explorer++ but Explorer++ is the only non-Windows file manager I seen that can do this. Also when Explorer++ does the feature it's only 'per-session' meaning that if you were to go to another folder and then come back again the disabled auto-arrange is not there (which Windows can always remember properly).
+1 Yes I support this feature request for a future XnView release (xnview mp). Pierre (xnview developer) could analyze how it's being done in Explorer++ and try to replicate.
If added to XnView I would also like if XnView 'remembered' the icon positions in folders for disabled auto-arrange.

This has been discussed many times before in the forum. For instance, here.
XnView MP has limited functionality related to this request in that the sequence of thumbs in the browser can be manipulated freely by the user. However, user-controlled XY coordinates for the thumbs (as in a true light table) is not yet supported.

Re: move thumbnails around like in WIndows Desktop
This feature is essential for any creative use of filing and viewing software. Microsoft have created an uproar with the ill-considered removal of this custom capability with the move to Windows 7 and Windows Live photogallery software. Users of previous Windows XP software are roving the web to find alternative software with this custom capability or even fiddling with the registry to re-instate it !
My search led me to evaluate XnView and I find the viewer the best I've seen and the surrounding controls are great but I must have the custom filing and renaming facility.
Looking back through the forum I can see that the topic has been regularly requested since 2005 and in 2007 it got onto the 'Global requests and suggestions list' under the title ' Moving files within folder - sort by custom order' and it is back yet again here in 2010. Have XnView ever moved to respond to this requested improvement or is there a plan to do something about it in the near future. Does anyone know ?
I would value a response from XnView owner/programmer if this is possible ? Thank you.

Currently only XnViewMP allow you to use your own order of thumbnails.DavidR wrote:I would value a response from XnView owner/programmer if this is possible ? Thank you.

Hi Pierre...
Keep in mind that the request is not just for user specified sequence (1 degree of freedom)... but also for user specified position (2 degrees of freedom, 3 degrees if overlapping/stacking were implemented) in the thumb panel.
