I've seen some cool improvements suggested for the Crop tool, as a darkening of the outside area for example, but, unless I missed them) nothing about these features:
- It would be really great to be able to rotate the cropping area, as in Photoshop. Indeed there are many cases where you just would like to put the horizon right
- When we crop a photo, in many cases we would like to preserve the aspect ratio. This could be done by scaling the cropping area when we press the Shift key and move one of its corners (the origin of the scaling would be the corner diagonally opposed to the moved corner). It would be a very very useful behavior
One again Phososhop is a good reference for that behavior (Photoshop has a lot of very cleaver shortcuts )
- Once we apply a crop on a picture, this one, obviously, have smaller dimensions. In many cases we would like to get an image with the same size. I then suggest a new Crop and Resize tool that would apply a resize after the crop. In the GUI (see attached image) it is very important to preview the new possible sizes. This feature may sounds tricky but in fact it would be so useful for many of us dealing with large amount of family photos How many times have you cropped a poorly framed picture and realized afterwards that the saved image is smaller than the others?
Note: A list of algorithms to use for the resize could also be added in a combobox the dialog window
Thank you very much for your attention to those suggestions,
Regards

By the way, I would like to suggest a modification to a behavior I found especially frustrating:
Say we opened a picture and did some editing, when we press the Save As tool icon a Save As dialog box opens. The suggested name for the new file is right, but the path is the last path used to save a file :S 90% of the time you would need to save it in the same folder than the original image...
So this is my suggestion:
For the Crop and the Crop and Resize tools, the file path used in the Save As dialog should be:
- the folder of the original file, if it has one
- the current folder of the tree view (ie the one used to display the thumbnails in the Parcourir tab (sorry, don't know its title in the English version)) if the file has not been saved yet (picture from a scan or the clipboard for instance)
Wouah, cool You're the man!!
Exactly that, for the modified files. Why isn't this checked by default? Maybe that should be my new suggestion
I still would like the default folder to be the current one in the tree view when files have not been saved yet, because I do a lot of printscreens and that would save a lot of time.
Some of us keep the originals sequestered in a "safe" folder and save our modifications elsewhere...
Hum, well, so for my second suggestion, about the default folder when files have not been saved yet, maybe it should also be an option in the General -> File Operations panel, unchecked by default.
Otherwise it may change your way of working...
