Batch Edit IPTC

Scenario:
I have -say- 5 photos and want to assign the same keywords, caption, categories, headline to all of them.

Having the thumbnails in front of me, I would :
- select them all (ctrl-a),
- go to edit->meta-data
- click on "Clear all", to remove possible existing metadata (btw: maybe add this to writing options?)
- insert caption text (subject,where,date)
- copy-paste this to headline (btw: expand 1st item under writing options to include 'headline'?)
- select: Combine new and current values
- select: 1st option (Add new values to current value (Keywords & Sup Cat)
- click on "Write all selected"

Results: keywords and categories remain empty.
Have tried some other ways, but regretfully no success.

Most likely I might be doing something wrong.
The Help file at http://wiki.xnview.com/index.php/Metadata#IPTC does not help me out on this.
(maybe XnView does not yet support the above?)

Appreciate all suggestions.
