adding keywords without merging

Is there any way to add IPTC keywords to a group of images without all the images getting all of the keywords? That is, to only add the new keyword? The issue I have is a large number of pictures of plants that I want to tag with both the plant name and the locality. It would be very useful to be able to do all the localities, and then all of the plant names; but if it has to be done individually then it will be much more difficult. I've tried all combinations of the checkboxes under "combine current and new values" but none seem to give the desired result.

Do you have cleared all fields 'clear' button, before to enter your keyword?
