Favourites (& Options) are not remembered
I use XnView all the time and never wish to close it manually -- when minimised it sits in the System tray -- good!
When the PC is turned off each night I rely on XnView shutting down as well. It does! Also good.
However, if I make changes (add or edit) my Favourites (blue-star icon) the changes are NOT remembered if XnView is auto closed on PC shut down.
They are remembered only if XnView is manually closed and then re-opened!
Could such changes be remembered by XnView (written to its INI, Config, Registry or whatever) as soon as "OK" or "Close" is clicked for the changes ??
Thanks
Robin

Re: Favourites are not remembered

• The Favourites ARE saved in the file <bookmark.ini>. I assume that you have several versions of that file, located in different places, and the changed one isn't used when you restart XnView, or something in that painting…

Re: Favourites are not remembered
Sorry, I didn't explain very well.
Once changes are made to the Favourites and OK is clicked, the changes are written somewhere because they are available as long as XnView is open.
However, if XnView is closed by Windows when the PC is shut down, the changes are lost.
On next opening XnView the changes are not present.
The only way to have the changes kept by XnView and available on next opening is for XnView to be closed manually while the PC is still active.
Then, and only then are the changed favourites available when XnVew is next opened.
Hence what I ask is whether on hitting 'OK' or 'Close' the new Favourites can be written to a 'permanent' file, as it is when manually closed, and not to a temporary one!
Thanks
Robin

Re: Favourites are not remembered

• I got you alright… In order to check this, I :
1. Added a Favourite to mine in XnView 1.97.4
2. Kept XnView open in the task-bar
3. Closed other applications
4. Rebooted the PC
5. Started XnView and noticed that the last added Favourite is missing !
• Thus, I can confirm the bug now.
- The new favourite is saved when closing XnView manually.
• Hoping that Pierre will fix that oddity…

Re: Favourites are not remembered
I've just checked again in 1.97.5.
Still not remembered!
Still not remembered!
Re: Favourites are not remembered
Yes, I just checked again.
I added a new item by "Add Favourite"
then I re-booted without closing XnView.
When PC was up and XnView re-opened, the new favourite was not present!

Re: Favourites are not remembered
Houps sorry, yes not saved if you reboot before closing XnView.
Pierre.
Re: Favourites are not remembered
I've tried, but the system don't send me any message when you reboot

Pierre.
Re: Favourites are not remembered

• You could save the changed <bookmark.ini> as soon as a new item is added to it, rather than to save it on exit

Re: Favourites (& Options) are not remembered
I have just checked in version 1.98 and it still fails! I use XP SP3.
ALSO, this failure applies to at least some changes to Options as well.
For example, I changed Options > Preview > Auto play Video/Audio (checked).
Then I got XnView to hang up (froze) by clciking on an MOV file, which froze after playing (white shown for video) for a few seconds then hung up!
So, I had to close XnView using Task Manager.
On re-opening, the change to Options was undone -- not remembered!
The only way to save new Favourires or a change to Options is to close and re-open XnView before it has a chance to crash!

Re: Favourites (& Options) are not remembered
IIRC "Total Commander" has ..meRobs wrote:....The only way to save new Favourires or a change to Options is to close and re-open XnView before it has a chance to crash!
a) an option "Save current settings when closing: yes / no"
b) a command "Save settings now"
a) is fine when you playing around an you (do not) want to save the settings
b) is fine when you work in a crash-endangered situation.

Re: Favourites (& Options) are not remembered
Thanks for that.
During this week, I just finished a survey of ~9 Explorer-like Apps in an effort to find one that doesn't have the few small problems I find with XnView.
Half were not free and I had included Total Commander.
Unfortunately, none could handle things the way I like with XnView. For example, very few could screen capture (I use when writing Docs about tests I do on various software), have Favourites (access oft-used folders), multi-rename as conveniently or have a good viewer for image, audio and video.
XnView is by far the best for my needs,
I am just trying to remove/improve a few minor problems.

Re: Favourites (& Options) are not remembered
You have to consider thatmeRobs wrote:...Half were not free and I had included Total Commander....
- TC is a "file-manager" where you can add viewing, capturing and so on with plugins
- XnView is an "image-manger" where you can add file-features with plugins..

Re: Favourites (& Options) are not remembered
Yes, I realise that.
TC has the dual-window, commander style approach that can do more involved file handling.
As I mentioned above, all I need is the file managemnet skills of Windows Explorer plus image/audo/video viewing, etc, which XnView offers.
XnView is escellent for my needs, whereas, TC fall very short (for me)!
If you don't mind, no more on this. It takes the attention from the main Topic
