Help to Install XnViewMP in Ubuntu 10.04

This is what I did:-

I download XnViewMP-linux.tgx into my downloads folder
opened it and read README
made the two changes to XNView.desktop so it reads

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Terminal=0
Exec=/home/cjp/Desktop/XnViewMP-025/xnview.sh
Icon=/home/cjp/Desktop/XnViewMP-025/xnview.png
Type=Application
Categories=Graphics;
StartupNotify=true
Name=XnView Multi Platform
GenericName=XnViewMP

I put this changed file back into XnViewMP-026 within the archive XnViewMO-linux.tgx
and
I used Terminal to copy the changed file into /usr/share/applications


I searched the 'net

I found out how to install from tgz files and went into terminal and ran

Code: Select all

tar -zxvf /home/cjp/Downloads/XnViewMP-linux.tgz
XnViewMP-026/

lots of things happened and XNviewMP appeared in "applications graphics"

Clicked to run it and had an error message and that was it.
The error message was

So lacking helpful instructions for people like me who want an IRFANVIEW equivalent would someone help me out please?
Either with how to fix things to make it work or how to uninstall the stuff.
I would prefer the former but will settle for the un-installation instructions.

Linux is hard work for me and this XnView,com having no comprehensive instructions that I could see is not helping

cpcpcp, XnViewMP is a test version (from my point of view an alpha version rather than a beta), which is intended for testing purposes, not for normal usage. So please calm down and bear having some problems. Or simply wait till things have been finalized and described thoroughly. Thank you.

Thank you for responding.
After I had attempted the install I found the .deb things you gave the link to but by then I had had my attempt and so my cry for help.

As to response of Helmut, the moderator, saying calm down and not assisting (even with my how to un-install request) let me say I much preferred your response

I think ultimately the problem is the PCI card not being picked up by Ubuntu although the dreaded windows spotted it straight away.

Of course that still leaves me with a prog to un-install which I guess I will have to learn to live with <sigh>
