0.32 Request: Opening a new Empty tab

I just thought of this idea when closing an <Empty> tab in XnView MP. I thought that it would be nice to have the ability to open a blank tab both from the 'File' menu and by using a standard known new-tab hotkey of Ctrl+T - if this key is vacantly ok to use.

Currently the only way to access an <Empty> tab is to close the last remaining tab (file's tab or 'Browser' tab) that is opened.

I think if this feature ability was ever implemented then in the 'File' menu it could be simply named New tab like in modern web browsers, tabbed file managers etc

The purpose of the existing <Empty> tab feature in XnView MP is to have a free canvas for ready-to-go action, mostly for files drag n drop on a free canvas tab especially when a user may have other tabs that are open with their own file lists etc. So the purpose for this accompanying feature is to simply access this <Empty> tab on user quick choice.

I made this mock-up to show readers;


.. On the 'File' menu, a menu icon for 'New Tab' would look nice but this first won't be important to include;

Also perhaps new tabs that are opened could be, for now, limited to a max number e.g. no more than 20 new tabs opened in one session or perhaps just make no limits on the amount opened.


I think this would be great feature if added, please support me guys.

Also, the Ctrl+W hotkey shortcut could be added for tab closing (if the hotkey isn't in use already) because this is standard tab closing hotkey found in any browser, file manager etc...MDI applications..

...not an important issue at this stage but one to be considered in future.

Also there should be a lock/maximum as to how many tabs could be opened from this control e.g. max = 20 . Twenty would be good enough.

What is your opinion about this feature? Do you think it would be cool if we could open a new blank tab or perhaps something else in a new tab e.g. a next pic in filelist?

My use of MP always displays the tab bar in the browser. When I drag-and-drop an image to an instance of MP I always drop it on an empty spot on the tab bar...

So it is not clear to me what advantage an "Empty" tab has.

The purpose of the "Empty" tab is for users optionally (on program startup) that don't wish to use the Browser... Currently in XnView the "Empty" tab feature is could be enabled two ways separately or together:
(1) For program startup Settings>General>_startup{disable: Open browser}
AND
(2) For keeping program interface Settings>Interface>Tabs>{disable: Closing last tab exits XnvieW}

When I was in the process of making this topic, it was because I use drag 'n' drop method a lot in XnView MP which motivated me to think that ability to open a new tab would be good. It's that same (drag 'n' drop) perspective which made me create this topic.

John, you are correct in senses, the same original request of this topic should be ignored. At least for now, the majority of users wouldn't use it.
