I don't THINK this is possible, but I am sure it would be a neat feature
I have a couple of digital photo frames and many (many) thousands of image files
What I would like to do is provide Xnview with a list of images (perhaps a folder or a group of folders) and ask it to RANDOMLY select images to a set number (or a set total size perhaps)
In other words "copy a RANDOM selection of images from <here> and fill this removal memory card <there>"
Make sense?
Cheers
Phil G
PS If this IS possible now, please tell me how - Thanks

Re: Copy random set of files to alternate location
OK, been thinking about this, and actually it would be acceptable if you could just add an extension to the Edit.Select menu entry
Instead of just Select.None and Select. All you could have Select. Some leading to an additional dialog where you could define what "some" means. Could be random selection, could be files over a ceryain size, could have an additional limitation on number of files selected and/or total size selected THEN it would be a simple matter to copy the selected files to wherever they were wanted
It would also be useful if there was an option to read files from subfolders or just from the selected folder
Thanks

PS Snag is, no one has made ANY comment on my original suggestion, so I am feeling it's not likely to get a high priority

Re: Copy random set of files to alternate location
Well, a year has gone by with NO comments, so perhaps it's only me that would appreciate:
- An easy way to select a RANDOM selection of images from a folder (and subfolders_
- To enable those randomly selected images to then simply be copied to another location (memory card, digital photo frame, personal device)
Surely as more people get into digital photography this would be really useful
Even something as simple as an addition to the EDIT.SELECT/SELECT ALL would do (something like SELECT SOME with a further dialogue to define what "some" means - every nth image, or a random selection. Ideally with an upper limit in either number of images or total selected size
Is it REALLY just me that would like this???

Re: Copy random set of files to alternate location
For Total Commander users, there is a (free) metadata (wdx) plugin that generates a random number for each file and displays it in a column of the file list. One can then sort the column, set a filter on the column, use the column value in the batch renamer, etc, etc.
Perhaps this approach would work for you until XnView has a similar feature.
