I'm trying XnView-MP 0.35 on a couple of Debian Linux machines. The only problem I've encountered so far is the creation of duplicate categories.
As I create categories and assign photos to them, I often see new duplicate categories show up in the category pane. When I delete one of the duplicates, the photos previously assigned to that category are no longer assigned to the remaining duplicate. (That may depend on which duplicate I delete. I haven't figured that out yet.)
What's going on here?

Re: Duplicate Categories
Are categories capitalized the same? There is an import option which can create both 'testing' and 'Testing' at same time.
Options... Browser>Metadata>[x]Import XMP subject or IPTC keyword to DB Categories

Re: Duplicate Categories
Thanks marsh. Un-checking that option fixed the problem.
The issue wasn't capitalization. It appears that XnView was reading keywords that had previously been placed in my photo files by another program (probably F-Spot) and creating new categories with those names. Some of these words were the same as the category names that I was creating with XnView, thus causing duplicate categories.

Re: Duplicate Categories
Is there a possibility to edit these "inbound" xnview-categories?

Re: Duplicate Categories
If you have this option, XnView create categories from IPTC keywords...
