I think asking new users about how they expect to use the program, in the first-run dialog, would save time configuring it. While the full featured defaults show off new capabilities, I'm not sure this represents a typical usage pattern of wanting only images.
Do you want to use program only as an image viewer? {Yes/No}
(Answering "No" will use images and also video, audio, text, pdf.)

I feel that the many arguably good features added over the years have transformed program into an expert one. And that feature removal, option consolidation and redesign would be more suitable for simpler users like myself if workarounds like these are not sufficient.
