Instant Crash of XnView with Fullscreen and this Image

Post by ehathgepiurhe »

Hi,

Whenever I try and go fullscreen (F11) on this image, XnView instantly crashes:
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/350/141766.jpg

Win 7 64bit, XnView 1.98.1 (full installer with no changes to the suggested options)

Edit: And these as well (possibly the same crash):
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/9086/141769.jpg
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/126/141780.jpg
http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1600/141785.jpg
All 4 images were downloaded from the same wallpaper site today (and all seem to have been shortly deleted afterwards, so I had to upload the samples to ImageShack)

CM

:) Hi !

• Same as Peter2 : No problem here with XnView 1.98.1 and XP-Pro…
The image was shown in View, started from Total Commander (D&D onto the XnView icon of the TC button-bar).

If in view mode, you press 'I'?

Hi,

This is odd. I have just tried that. The first time I go and click on the View-->Show Information option, nothing happens. If I then click on the View menu again, I see there is no tick beside the Show Information option (so it is as if I never clicked it in the first place). When I then go and click the Show Information option a second time and then roll the mousewheel, XnView instantly crashes. :(

When I do the F11 thing, I do it from the browser window. So I open XnView, it shows the thumbnails of each picture in my database. I then find the relevant file, click the thumbnail to highlight, then hit F11 - and that is when XnView crashes.

Edit #1: Actually, that only happens on the first image link I posted (141766.jpg). If I try on the second link (141769.jpg), the Show Information option gets ticked when I first click it. From then on, nothing happens...until I roll the mousewheel. At that point, XnView instantly crashes.

Edit #2: I am going to have to try this on all 4 images. With the third link (141780.jpg), the moment I click Show Information, XnView crashes. Off to try the last link!

Edit #3: Ok, with the last link (141785.jpg), when I click Show Information, nothing happens. However, there is no tick placed beside that option when I do click it. If I then go and click the Show Information option again, and then roll the mousewheel, XnView instantly crashes. So basically the same as 141766.jpg

Hi Clo - a few people here from the Total Commander forums I see! :D

Ok, I removed the tick from the Show Information option in Tools-->Options-->View-->Fullscreen, and then opened each file. All four images open without crashing XnView, even when I then use the mousewheel (which I haven't changed from the default, so this zooms in and out on the images). The result is a little unexpected. The image that crashed the moment I clicked the 'Show Information option' - yes, I would have expected that not to crash when I disabled 'Show Information'. The other images seemed to crash when zooming after enabling the 'Show Information' option however (just enabling the option didn't seem to be enough to trigger the crash), so I thought we might have had two separate crashes here. It would seem that I was wrong (though I can't explain why they crash only after zooming when Show Information is enabled - a little bit strange). :(

Anyway, it looks like something in the EXIF information is crashing XnView with these images. Opening each image up in IrfanView with the same EXIF information showing, there is no crash. So the problem is XnView specific.

Edit: Actually, I can check which bit of EXIF data is the problem. By removing each line one at a time, I was able to narrow it down to the problem line. It seems the line that causes the crash is:
EXIF User Comment: <User Comment>
(Insert-->Exif - Image-->User Comment from the "Insert>>" button in the XnView preferences)

The User Comment was the one changed in v1.98.1 I believe, in response to this thread:
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=22917

A regression perhaps (the bug fix has actually introduced a new bug I mean)? Hopefully it can be fixed.

Could you send me the picture file?

I am glad to hear that :D I tend to find a majority of the problems I have with various software are unable to be reproduced by the author (and so are unable to be fixed) so it is nice to find one that can be reproduced!

Confirm fixed in v1.98.2. Happily, the other change (http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=22917) did not have to be reverted either (so it still works too).

Thanks Pierre :)
