Suggestion: ability to filter by rating *in* folders

Post by Captain_Carrot »

Hello,

I have a quick usability suggestion for the UI.

I love the quick image rating tools, and the fact that ratings tags can be written to the XMP data is fantastic. However, browsing the rated images is still a bit cumbersome.

When I want to see my 5-star rated images, I don't necessarily want to see *every single* 5-star rated image from every directory in my entire photo collection. :)

In light of this, it would be fantastic if users could apply a quick ratings or colour label filter while they're still in the directory view, so they can see how many top-rated photos are in each subdirectory (or even 3,4 and 1-star rated photos that also have purple colour labels, for example). That is, the user checks off which ratings and colour labels to filter by, then can browse around their directory structure and only see the photos that match those checked conditions in each subdirectory. Make sense? Even filtering by 'currently unrated' within a directory would be useful, especially while working on assigning ratings and colour labels to a batch of photos.

I am aware that View->Details allows one to sort by ratings, but unfortunately then you lose the thumbnails view. In short, I'm looking for a way to quickly see thumbnails for e.g. only the 5-star or 1-star rated photos in a given subdirectory, without showing all the other similarly rated photos on the system. Filtering by category or keyword would be nice, too, but that's not as easy as simply filtering directory/thumbnails view by ratings or colour labels would be, so first things first... :P

Perhaps there is already a built-in way to do this? If so, I missed it completely!

Thanks,
cc

Wow! That's looking fantastic! :D

The quick filtering by colour and rating works excellent, thanks! There's only one minor refinement I could suggest: ability to filter on multiple ratings/colours (i.e., make the filter selections 'sticky', so the user can filter by '3, 4 or 5-rated, red or blue' by selecting the appropriate items in the filter dropdown...does that make sense?) Even without that refinement, though, this is an incredibly useful little feature, thanks!

Also FYI, I had a bit of trouble getting the 'info pane' to show up on first startup (no 'Info' tab showing up, just 'preview'). First I tried enabling the 'Preview as tab' option, but that just made the preview pane disappear completely. Once I switched the layout to anything besides the default, the 'info / preview' tabs on the info pane showed up again, and stayed visible when I switched back to the original layout. I don't know if it's a bug or just my system not playing nice, I will try on another system when I get a chance and let you know if it happens again.

Thanks again for continuing to improve an already stellar product!
