0.38 Win: Random crashes associated with video files

Post by vommie »

Hi

I've get a lot of crashes with XnViewMP 0.38 when I open up folders with videos. I tried to isolate video files where the crashes happens, but it seems it's randomly. For example, in one folder XnView crashed by creating thumbs for the fourth video file. But after a restart, it created the thumb for it without crashing, but then it happened some files after. At some files it crashes all the time (also after restarts) on specific video files - and when I isolate the one on which it always crashes (by moving the other files), it suddenly does not crash anymore on it. XnViewMP also crashes randomly when it loads thumbs from the cache. In one folder, it always happens at 54%, but I don't know on which file exactly.

0.35 does not crash in any way, neither on creating video thumbs or loading them.

I hope you can reproduce this arbitrary (?) bug.

Do you use Option/Thumbnail>"Do you use extract frame at..."?
Is it possible to have a folder of movie files (perhaps 2)??

0.35 create correctly all thumbs for video?

I tried around some more and I have to tell you I can't reproduce it anymore. No crashes since I posted this bug. But I occured them on a clean profile (except of the portable settings), so frame extraction is on 0%, and I used a clean/new database. 0.38 loaded some thumbs (e.g. 57% of them) and then it crashed. Sometimes it got loaded them all, sometimes only 1 or 3. It was kinda chaotic.

But now I get on some files an error-Dialog: "xvidcore.dll not found". But XviD is installed (natively), and I don't occur this message in MP 0.35 or in any other program on my system. Could this be associated with the crashes I can't reproduce right now?

This is strange, because e.g. I use a folder with 22.513 video files (yup, much!), all encodec in XviD with the same lib. XnView loads ~70% of them without problems, but then it gives me an Error-dialog on every single file for the rest of the folder, but the files are encodec exactly the same way as the ones before the error occurs. As alread said - 0.35 has absolutely no problems or Errors.

Sorry for the double post. Now I occur the crashes again (using 0.38.2). But sometimes it still gives me the error.

It seems both problems have the same source. I also sometimes get an "AVI Chunk Viewer"-Window popping up.

In cases I am getting an Error-dialog instead of XnView is crashing directly, I scrolled to the position MP stopped creating thumbs (waiting for closing the error-message) and so I found the video files XnView got trouble with. I copied them out to another folder on same drive, and then XnView neither had an error or a crash at creating thumbs for them on the new location. :| So decoding the video itself seems not to be the problem, but the position or location? That's over my head.

XviD itself is as I said installed clean with default settings, and XnView 0.35 - even as every other program which is playing videos or creating thumbs (Explorer, Directory Opus, ACDSee, ...) - is working like charm.

And #3 (Sorry)

Tried around some more. Now I think it also could have to do with x32/x64.

XnView 0.35 x64: No Problems.
XnView 0.35 x32: Errors & Crashes
XnView 0.38 x32: Errors & Crashes

As there is no 0.38 x64 yet, I can not check this. But possibly this Info helps you.

Hey

No difference in build #3. But now I have a new idea: The RAM again.

In one folder, it always crashes or gives me the XviD-Errors when XnView is using 1824 MB RAM
In another folder, it always happens at 1848 MB RAM
(=~16.000 thumbs at a size of 205x150)

My system has 8GB ram, in the past of XnView, when no x64-builds where available, it always crashed at 3GB Ram usage. But not at 1,8GB.

My biggest folder with pictures only has ~10.000 files at moment, so possibly that's why I did not occured crashes with pictures.

So I activated the "view files in subfolders"-feature for my whole images folder structure to get the RAM filled. And tadaaaa: At 1.888 MB RAM usage: Crash!

It's weird because I have 4GB Ram free at all, and as already said XnView was in the past able to allocate 3GB of RAM in x32. But this seems to be the problem. Even I mean to remember me I also had problems on folders with around 20 files, but at moment I only get crashes for sure on big folders.

Sorry for the chaotic way of bug reporting.

Ok, so it's the problem. I'll check why you have crash with a lot of thumbs...
