Dual image viewing

Hi.

I have been testing xnview in order to be a suitable candidate to substitute the other softwares I use. My company does book scanning and we need a flexible tool for quality control, renaming and checking of metadata. Is there a possibility for xnview to present dual pages, just like a PDF document set for two up with cover page? Also, since we work with color images with 300 dpi or more, can the cache image be extended to 4 images ahead instead of 1?

Have you tried:

1. Select 2 (or more) images
2. Tools>Compare...

Compare works quite well, though it needs more functionality.

Notice that Compare appears in a tab, so you can have multiple Compares open at a time. Also, you can use the thumbstrip to switch any image in the compare. Simply click on one of the compared images (first) THEN click on a thumb...

A simple solution could be to start two sessions of XnView, arrange the windows as you like and use the navigation-functions of the software.

If you need special functions (one click - scroll two; merging of images; ...) ask the developer for special, personal modifications.

Simple but not practical for frequent use

Compare works quite well, though it needs more functionality.

You are right here in the similarity of using the "Compare" function from the Browser.

brunoflores, could you try the "Compare" function and then report back to this topic what specific suggestions you could make?

Probably you might also prefer to have an option for that bottom thumbstrip to be in a vertical display for that real PDF-alike user-experience

I tried the compare and also having two instances of the software open. Not too practical. You just need to imagine that what you are seeing is a book, presented to you with one page and preferably 2 pages, the left and right page. For example you are at image001.tif and image002.tif, you are are viewing them side by side, you can choose to just look and edit one of them, but the default for me would be having always left and right page side by side. When you scroll down to the next, it should open image003.tif and image004.tif. Is this too dificult to change or manage?
Also, I'm not really into the PDF experience, I was just using it as an example because it can display two pages at a time with the Cover Up.

I think this is the problem to define. Now you say compare "1/2" and then "3/4". But what if the user wants to compare "1/2", "1/3", "1/4", "2/4"? What is if file 5 is missing? Compare "6/7"? ...
This is why I recommended the "manual solution" - the users clicks, the software displays ...

I understand your point. Think of it this way. We are not comparing two images, we are seeing two images, that should complement each other. I can explain a bit more. Instead of thinking of comparing, imagine that you always see two images, the one you actually want to see and always the next one. If an image is missing (part of the quality control check) it will show image003.tif and image004.tif. Imediatelly a visually you check that theres a page and the corresponding imagem missing.

OK, now I see - and I think I got a simple solution (95 %)

- go to Browser mode
- shut off the "Folder tree - pane" and the "Properties pane"
- set to "Display Thumbnails"
- under F12 /Thumbnails / Appearance set the size of the thumbnails, depending of the size of your screen (example: for my old 17" monitor I use 460 / 600 pixels)
- now all files are displayed like "pages in Acrobat"
- you can scroll up and down ...

Really nice. Thanks. At the moment is 95% perfect for my work. Trying to adjust the work area and the thumbnail size. But that's exactly the idea, as shown in my attachment. Also the thumbnails are rendered so that means that it really fast to scroll down the "book". Now i'm trying to get the best image fit and work areas for my two 22"inch monitors, specially trying to eliminate the gap between the two thumbnails, so it looks more "bookish".

Perhaps when Piere returns to the forum again from his rest, a new feature for a 'mode' that incorporates Peter2's instructions can be created, since the ability, requested by bruno, seems to be in XnView MP already allbeit 95%
