XnView 1.98.2:
  • Smooth: enabled
"High quality": Reduce disabled, Enlarge disabled
Zoom setting: Fit to image to window
MP
  • Smooth: enabled
"High quality": Reduce enabled, Enlarge enabled

I think the high-quality setting explains the performance differential. Enabling "High quality" in 1.98 slows the rotate considerably.

Sorry for not applying logic before posting.

Strange, so it's only the viewing? If you have not 'high quality', it's better? And for the spped between XnView & XnViewMP?

Toggling high quality between Reduce and Off has no visible effect (to this test) in either tool (I'm just counting seconds, not using a stopwatch).

Also, enabling smoothing and cropping (in 1.98.2) also don't appear to make a significant difference.

After comparing many runs of 1.98.2 "free rotate smooth and crop" and MP "crop rotated selection", 1.98.2 is consistently about 50% faster.

Perhaps in a future MP, free rotate will be available and I will test again.

I've tried, but not faster for me. (even fastest on xnviewmp)
You means "slow" is the time to process the rotation, right?
(I use the same method for the XnView & XnViewMP)

Well, still apples to oranges.

1. The time estimated for 1.98.2 is from the instant I finish typing the rotation amount into the rotation dialog until the instant the rotation result appears in the view.

2. The time in MP is the instant I click crop in the toolbar (-after already having drawn/rotated the selection with the mouse)) to the instant the crop result appears in the view.

As I said, apples to oranges, but #2 is consistently about twice as long as #1.

Let's wait until we have an actual free rotate command in MP before drawing too many conclusions. I only reported this because it seemed such a big difference between the two...
