It sounds a little bit stupid - but I have problems to define a filter which displays only files with extension TIF or TIFF. I selected "images" and selected "user defined" and set TIF TIFF to the user-defined-definitions: any all I can see is DWG.
What's wrong?

Re: How to define a filter for "TIF" and "TIFF"
Hello,
Tif only files are displayed for me by changing small toolbar filter to custom, and changing file list in options to be all unmarked except the lowest custom field [x] [TIF_____]

Re: How to define a filter for "TIF" and "TIFF"
OK, thanks. I had problems to switch off DWG, but they seem to defined as "Images". After disabling "Images" the DWG were gone.

Thank you for your helpful answer, marsh!
An explanatory note from my side:
The fields "Custom files (*)" can be used for including or excluding files, depending on the setting of the checkboxes. Typically one field is used for including and the other one for excluding files, just like in the above screenshot above.

Re: How to define a filter for "TIF" and "TIFF"
I do not understand. How to define what is NOT displayed? I thought everything what is not defined is not displayed (file extension ABC, 123, 456, ..).helmut wrote:...Typically one field is used for including and the other one for excluding files, just like in the above screenshot above.
Or do you mean:
- enabled "Images" will display JPG, TIF, BMP,..
- BUT defining BMP in a disabled custom field will exclude it (although it is included in "Images")?

Re: How to define a filter for "TIF" and "TIFF"
Unchecking a checkbox means "exclude", checking a checkbox means include. This applies for each single checkbox. To fully exclude a file type group (Images, Videos, ... or Custom files) in all modes, you uncheck all checkboxes in that specific row. File extensions not supported/known by XnView are handled by file type group "All other files". The two "Custom fields" have priority over all other filetype groups (Images, Videos, ...).Peter2 wrote:I do not understand. How to define what is NOT displayed? Right. By unchecking all checkboxes of a custom field you can specify a (full) exclusion and define what is not displayed at all: All files with the file extensions listed in the custom field will be excluded. The Custom field settings have priority over other fields (Images, Videos, ...), so you can even exclude even specific files (e.g. jpg) while keeping other image files included.Peter2 wrote:Or do you mean:

The usage of the file filter often poses questions. Perhaps time to write an FAQ...

Re: How to define a filter for "TIF" and "TIFF"
Hello to all.
All the problems with the custom filter would be much easier, if you just would build a custom input line in. Then all the user have to do is just type the file types in, and they would be filtered realtime.
1. To filter PSD files the user have to type just "psd" in f.e.
2. To filter "psd", "png" and "jpeg" altogether, the user just type them in seperated by a sign or a space.
The example for a comma seperated type in would be in this case: psd, png, jpeg
A filter history could complete this kind of filter function. Very easy and good to understand.
There is no more to do. The current solution makes it too much complicated in my opinion. I've attached a small example for this.
Best wishes
Chris

Re: How to define a filter for "TIF" and "TIFF"
Yes, a fine and reasonable proposal. I think it covers 95% of the needs of a standard user.
But it has not the power and complexity of the current filter. If someone wants to display "Images" and has really 10 different types of images - then he will be not satisfied with the new filter.
A combination of "simple filter" and "extended filter" would be nice. And the next step of this discussion will be a "quick filter/search for Filenames" (like Total Commander with plugins ...)
