Hello,
Thanks for XnView,
(I just installed it and appreciate the tagging options available)
If I understood this thread (http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p ... ary#p98195) metadata is stores in the db of XnView?
Where is stored this db? Is it readable (modifiable)?
If I change my os (or crash my computer), is it possible to restore all the ratings and other information?
If I change the paths to the files tagged by XnView does the tagging info remains?
Where the rating information is stored (Which file)?
Thanks !
Christian
Metadata info (restoring rating tags & categorie)?

All is stored in category.db, you have the pathname in 'About' dialog
If you change the path of your files, XnView will have a problem...

Whether caused by the user intentionally using another utility (such as a file manager) to move image files or accidentally (per misadventure), the loss of XnView image category data can be devastating. I speak from personal experience.xnview wrote:All is stored in category.db, you have the pathname in 'About' dialog

The centralized caching of image metadata (of any kind) is only effective if XnView is the only tool used to copy/move/rename the image files. My guess is this is rarely (if ever!) the case.
This is why XnView desperately needs a "resolve category.db issues" utility.
Such a utility would list all of the images in the database arranged in a virtual folder tree according to the stored image locations. Missing folders and images would be highlighted. The user could select "missing" folder subtrees (or individual images) and, using a system folder tree, "remap" them to their new locations in the file system. XnView would then update the path references in the database and all would be as before, with no loss of data.

Re: Metadata info (restoring rating tags & categorie)?
Hello,
Thanks for the answer.
I don't find the the "category.db" file in KnView repertory (I didn,t use the category but just the tagging options)? Is it normal?
And in the 'About' it says "INI file location: G:\Documents and Settings\MyName\"? Is it the Ntuser.ini?
So that's why I would use XnView for short term work but I will not count on the tag/category system for categorize my photos in the longer term (that's also my problem with Picasa)
Thanks for the software it is useful anyway!

I agree... and the other problem is to back up your work or to synchronize it to another computer or to restore it on a new computer...The centralized caching of image metadata (of any kind) is only effective if XnView is the only tool used to copy/move/rename the image files. It's the same path for xnview.ini and .dbzibudizz wrote: I don't find the the "category.db" file in KnView repertory (I didn,t use the category but just the tagging options)? Is it normal?

You would to store rating in the file itself??So that's why I would use XnView for short term work but I will not count on the tag/category system for categorize my photos in the longer term (that's also my problem with Picasa)

Re: Metadata info (restoring rating tags & categorie)?
If I understood the question. Yes, there is good chance that I would use the category in a long term manner (tag, rating and color) and the software in a more systematic way if it was possible (and technically easy) to store taht info in the file itself. You would to store rating in the file itself??
In another manner, the other problem for me is the speed to visualize and navigate through heavy pictures (in my case 2 Mb which is not that heavy). Picasa or KuView (open source) is doing that good for example (and not the other software I was using: Irfan view) by previewing the image in bad quality for the first seconds.
(If XnView was open source... I would even be more motivated to use it and do advertising for it

Mais merci pour le logiciel !!
(I will try later to resolve the problem od the db file... that I didn't find... I understand it's not in the C program folder by default -using WinXP-)
