No Update for Thumbnails?!?
Moderators: helmut, XnTriq, xnview
Using The EvilHammer's message as a clue, I think I have found the root cause of my particular problem. If I enable caching, embedded thumbnails are used regardless of my option setting for thumbnails (ie, whether or not 'use embedded thumbnails' is checked).
If I disable caching, then the correct functionality for the 'use embedded thumbnails' seems to be restored.
I assume this must be a bug in verion 1.80.3.
Sincerely,
rock8rob

With "Use embedded thumbnail", xnview don't create thumbnail from picture. So if you change the picture, xnview doesn't change the embedded thumbnail.TheEvilHammer wrote:I'm pretty sure that my camera writes all the EXIF data correctly - I can view EXIF data for any image file through Explorer's "Properties" dialog and through XnView's "Properties" dialog. My camera is a Toshiba PDR-M60.
I have altered some of my images before using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and IrfanView, so maybe one of those (I would guess the former) is the culprit.
However, as I mentioned before, I have disabled the "Use Embedded thumbnails" option, and now the thumbnails and pictures all match up correctly. I am assuming disabling this option forces XnView to create thumbnails on the fly. Even if this is true, my XnView still works amazingly fast - I don't notice any lag or loading times at all. And I also have the cache disabled too!
Pierre.
Do you have made a clean of the cache?guest wrote:Using The EvilHammer's message as a clue, I think I have found the root cause of my particular problem. Thanks for your response, Pierre. And I think I see your point.
To get my thumbnails to match my edits, I have to turn off "use embedded thumbnails" and clean/remove all the items from my cache. But in addition to this, I either have to move to another folder and then back to my folder of interest, or I have to exit and restart the application. Using any of the various "refresh" commands will not refresh the thumbnails in my current folder view. Does this seem like the functionality you would expect?
And just to clarify on embedded thumbnails...do they come from the original camera data? Therefore, does this mean that any subsequent edits to the photos/image files would not appear in the embedded thumbnails?
Thanks,
rock8rob

You should know, that they are the reason why xnView is that fast.
Let's find the causes before you delete the symptoms!
Built in xnView is actually only a way to remove the embedded thumbnail for the JPEG you've in the viewer:
Edit -> Metadata -> Remove EXIF thumbnail
To improve xnView, I've made this request.

Unless someone cares to correct me, I believe the thumbnail shown in the "Edit IPTC Data" dialog is a thumbnail that's created on the fly and not embedded in the file. I also realized that the "Remove EXIF thumbnail" action was greyed out because I didn't have any EXIF data for the particular image I was looking at.
Thanks for the pointer to jhead - that program is a lifesaver! I'm happy to report that all the EXIF data (including thumbnails) in all of my images has been blown away and now everything shows up correctly (and beautifully) in XnView.
Thanks for all the help!

- When a thumb-nails table is displayed in the browser, you can use the "Refresh" button, set in the small 8-icon tool-bar.
Also the same from the “View” menu…
You can set too an automatic refresh : Options >> Browser [+] >> File List >> Tick the box Auto-refresh.

So, 'cause it is my first post here, I of course have to say WOW (actually many many times) to this program. A very rare dedication with an excellent outcome. Used another very popular viewer (you know all), tried out XnView and it took me about 5 mins to decide with which I would go from now on...
</flavour text>
Back to topic: I am not sure, but is it really intentionally that an embedded thumb is not updated if you edit (filters or colors/contrast/etc. or red eye) the picture. This is even the case if I change the picture with the option "use embedded thumb" on and turn it off after the editing. no way to get the refreshed thumbs without manually removing them (edit/metadata/delete).
Doesn't really make sense to me. In addition if I remove the EXIF thumb (edit/metadata/delete), turn on "use embedded" and THEN edit the picture the thumb IS updated. So it seems that only the original embedded thumb is not updated???
I really hope that this is a bug and not a feature (i.e. that this will get fixed) because actually this is the only problem (and for me it is one) I came across so far.
My wish: pls make XnView display an updated thumb at any time, regardless if using embedded thumbs or not. As soon as the picture is edited, the thumb should change as well. The best solution would be to check if the last modifed date of the image file is the same as the date the thumb was created (if that date is stored anywhere). In that case you could edit the image outside of XnView and if you browse to the picture with XnView, it could recognise that the thumb has a different change time as the file and could update the thumb.

Some correction to my former post:
It seems (because now it takes a long time to display the thumbs) that if you delete an embedded thumb and then set the option "use embedded thumbs" to ON, the thumbs are not embedded by XnView, which I though is the case (and still think that it would make sense). So, right now if you delete them they are gone forever.
Addition to my wish: If option "use embedded thumbs" is set, XnView should embed the (updated) thumbs.

Hi, this is an old thread, but I still have problems with this:
Icons do not update. I have refreshed the folder, and moved files, but the icons remain. What to do, this is very bad in some cases:
I opened the directory of my digital camera and XnView showed me lots of really old photos! Strange. But hey, that was only the icons that were old, the photos were actually new ones (I had earlier removed the old ones, but new photos got the same numeric filenames, ergo XnView thought them to be the old ones). Very confusing.
Is there any news on this?
