b1: Thumbnails for folders - long creating
Moderators: helmut, XnTriq, xnview
The only advice I can offer is to use XnView's cache
and make sure "C:\Program Files\XnView\*.*" is excluded from your AV software.

Currently i can only start thumbnail folder creation at the begining or at the end. So which is better?Dreamer wrote:I think it's absolutely clear. The problem might be to implement the same behavior to folders, but at least thumbnails for folders should be created first and then thumbnails for images the same way as now.
Pierre.
I strongly disagree.Xyzzy wrote:At the end, because the current folder (and its contents) is the most interesting for an user & 4in1 creation is longer that for normal thumbnails.
- creation of image thumbnails is very long sometimes and 4in1 thumbnails feature is useless then
- old icons are displayed first, it's not nice
- you can disable 4in1 thubmnails
- you can disable folders completely
- 4in1 creation is NOT so much longer (more above)
And some help from Helmut

But now "currently displayed" are folders (first)...Xyzzy wrote:For the future the described approach should be used (render first what is currently displayed).

- Creation of 4in1 thumbnails is very long sometimes, especially when there are many directories with videos inside. And I sit and wait for these 4in1s to display... while first I'd like to see current directory.Dreamer wrote: - creation of image thumbnails is very long sometimes and 4in1 thumbnails feature is useless then
Your personal preference. Mine is faster directory contents display. And that's the point: the most important for the user is current directory=it's contents. Can you make up another GENERAL logic?Dreamer wrote: - old icons are displayed first, it's not nice
I can even use Filter, that's faster. So what? We are talking about view with enabled 4in1s and folders.Dreamer wrote: - you can disable 4in1 thubmnails

Relative. Too long for me.Dreamer wrote: - 4in1 creation is NOT so much longer (more above)
But I cannot stop creation with scrolling down if all folders are to be rendered first. That's the problem.Dreamer wrote:But now "currently displayed" are folders (first)...Xyzzy wrote:For the future the described approach should be used (render first what is currently displayed).

How long? Maybe you have some strange problem, for me it almost immediate.Xyzzy wrote:- Creation of 4in1 thumbnails is very long sometimes, especially when there are many directories with videos inside. BTW I must wait 20 or 30 seconds while thumbnails for many images are creating.
Right, so you have 3 possibilities to disable 4in1 thumbnails and see image thumbnails immediately, I have NO possibility to show 4in1 thumbnails first.Xyzzy wrote:I can even use Filter, that's faster. Right, but contents are also folders.most important for the user is current directory=it's contents
I prefer that the folder icons be built at the beginning because of the way I store images. My folder tree consists of a parent folder with many subfolders. The parent folder has no (or few images in it). This schema applies all the way down the folder hierarchy... that is, the majority of the images is stored in folders at the bottom (not top) of the folder hierarchy.
So, as I navigate down the folder hierarchy, it is most important for me to see the folder icons FIRST, regardless of the image contents of the folder.
Hope this helps!

Just Xyzzy wants the current behavior, me, Helmut and JohnFredC want 4in1 thumbnails first.xnview wrote:I don't know what to do, at the beginning or at the end....Dreamer wrote:Still not changed in RC3, somebody help me please...

Not fixed - postponed.XnView should track which items are visible to the user and ensure that these are built up - when opening a folder but also when scrolling while the thumbnails are about being created. That's a slight but important difference.
Fixed.I guess my suggested approach is hard to implement, so we should implement the solution that you have suggested (creation of thumbnails for folders first, then thumbnail for images).
