Re: All Layout Options are Broken
Hello Pierre, hello all,
I agreed, when it was said that the layout-thing needed rework. However, the latest update broke my preferred and hard earned layout
To put the question short: Why is it no longer possible to place anything UNDER a filmstrip...
To be honest, I love the filmstrip appearance and don't understand, why there are only THREE possible setups with such an appearance.
99% of all users will be having their monitors landscape... so why are there only so few landscape browsing-modes...
I would love to see an option, as suggested in here, so everybody can freely choose, what he or she prefers...
For me or from my point of view, the layout handling is still "work in progress".
From my side, the suggestion I already linked here, should be incorporated.
I am trying to show my "4-area-layout"... which I did not judge to be "special" in any way... and I "just" want a filmstrip in the upper right area. I tried for almost 45 minutes, without success... Even with deleted xnview.ini and a "fresh start", I could not find a way to configure the layout as desired.
--> Anyway, thumbs-up for Pierre and his efforts and constant updates for this great programm!!! <--

you cannot have Preview stacked with other panels, but just put them (eg Info, Categories) to the right side

Re: All Layout Options are Broken
Thank you @user0 for your feedback and suggestions. For the time being, I will be trying it, the way shown... with filmstrip down right hand side
Keeps the brain flexible
BTW, it makes sense not to stack something with (the integrated) preview.
I was therefore using the separate preview window, which I then included in the "info" window.
Otherwise, if filmstrip was available, layout4(?) could have done the trick.

Re: All Layout Options are Broken
Until the layouts were very recently overhauled, there used to be only TWO.OnkelTom wrote: Sun Jan 25, 2026 5:06 pm ... I love the filmstrip appearance and don't understand, why there are only THREE possible setups with such an appearance.
To be fair, there are an infinite number of possible layouts, since you can move panels around and stack/tab them.
As previously mentioned, you can recreate the look you desire using Filmstrip 1, except the preview cannot be in a tab.
You can recreate the layout you desire exactly using Layout 5 and moving things around, except you will still have a vertically scrolling browser, which is not very filmstrip like.
There are certain (imo unreasonable) restrictions about how certain layouts can be rearranged. I don't think it makes sense to keep adding more and more layouts. Better to address the restrictions.
But I think having an option to make the browser Horizontal-scroll instead of Vertical-scroll might be the best way. That could effectively turn any layout into a "filmstrip" style layout.
