Sort by the date the photo was taken

I suggest you do a google search to find a Spanish-language article that explains all the different date-related fields and what they mean, and how dates work in Windows Explorer.

Do you know of such an article in English? i've been looking for one for 15 or 20 years (not exaggerating) and they have different, contradictory explanations for what precisely Windows means by Created, Accessed and Modified. The situation is so bad i've made spreadsheets with verbatim quotes for the terms from different articles to show how they contradict each other as well as what I see myself in my own controlled A/B tests. I wonder if Windows itself is inconsistent and changes its date-handling behavior from one moment to the next in (horrifically failed) attempts to predict what the user wants, or it changes from one Win update to the next. Sometimes I find documentation for professional programmers but I'm not one. I'm a highly advanced power user but not a programmer.

There are indeed cases where it gets a little confusing. I was trying to find a way to sort the files the same way Windows Explorer does by the “Date” field, but it seems that each program sorts them differently. The thing is, in XnView I can't sort them the same way they're displayed in Windows by the “Date” field. My goal was to have them displayed in the same order so I could rename them, but that's not possible.

Windows "Date" field (just "Date", not Date Created or Date-anything-else) is maybe the most erratic, convoluted and confusing of all the date fields because it means something entirely different for every file type (document, image, video etc.), which I only know because ironically it's also the only one for which I've seen a clear and thorough definition from an official Microsoft source in a decade-plus of searching. I strongly recommend that everyone who wants to know how dates in Windows work read this regardless of whether they want to use "Date" itself because it gives some sense of why the other kinds of dates are also a hopeless snakepit of complications.

Caveat, I haven't tested to see if what they say is really how "Date" works so take it with a grain of salt because like I said some of their other information definitely does not match how things work on my computer.
