1. Find a thumbnail for shortcut in XnView.
2. Rightclick and choose "open"
3. "Warning! Error opening file (name)!"
Would be better if XnView recognised this as a shortcut and just opened it – the same as when you doubleclick it.

Mine is different.
I double-click on a shortcut for a folder and XnView produces the Move dialog then Copy dialog and then it opens the folder.

or a double-click >> View…
