Check boxes next to thumbnails - how do I remove them?

I'm sorry to revive such an old topic but...
it happens way too often to me to wonder how to remove these ** checkboxes that appear seemingly random from time to time.
Their removal is not intuitive, even if their showing up might be called neither intuitive nor non-intuitive.
I see thei can be invoked by spacebar... but why they are not hidden with another 'spacebar' and I have to dig again and again through the internet to find out the right menu to hide them? I forget how to hide them every single time I see them appear.
I wouldn't have written here if I wasn't extremely annoyed by this. I hope the author will do something to at least hide them with another press of spacebar...
This is way too good program to just pass and pretend I can find an alternative.
