preferences questions regarding raw files

Post by BabaG »

are there preferences (and where are they found?) for loading
the included thumbnail from a raw image? i was reading the
irfanview forum and they mentioned this as a solution to some
of their raw issues. apparently there was an option set that
would load a thumbnail from the raw image instead of the
full raw image. it made for much faster loading if all you were
doing was viewing. on the other hand, it resulted in things i've
experienced here like misreported file size. makes sense to me
that viewing a thumb might report a different filesize than
viewing the full image.

also, they indicated an option to load a half size version of the
image. do we have such a thing here with xnview? that also
might explain misreported image dimensions. if so, where is
this option?

and finally, how would i address all of these options from
nconvert?

thanks,
BabaG

Go to Tools » Options... » View » Misc. » Camera RAW.
You can choose between Embedded Thumbnail, Half size and Full size.

does setting this preference in xnview have any effect on files processed with nconvert?

No, settings/options of XnView and nconvert are two different pair of shoes. nconvert is fully driven by the command line and the parameters specified, there's no such thing as a nconvert.ini with settings for nconvert.

nconvert is not a viewing but a conversion tool, those options you have mentioned refer to viewing and are not available as command line parameters.

BabaG, have you given XnConvert a/k/a NConvertGUI (XnConvert.zip) a try?

thanks helmut. makes it sound like uncalled for exposure compensations
produced through nconvert processing are bugs and not inadvertant
preference settings. having a problem with that on processed cr2 raw
files.

xntriq. thanks. no i have not tried xnconvert. i'm shooting some timelapse
photography and processing a lot of frames so nconvert is a good
solution for me. i run a script from the command line for what i'm doing.

thanks again,
