Keyword-handling like Adobe Bridge

Post by madn » Tue Jul 03, 2007 3:58 pm

Hi,

First: thanks for the amazing program, I just discovered it and am really impressed.

Second: I would like to see an implementation of the IPTC-keywords with a list like it's in Adobe Bridge. This would be much like the already integrated feature for XnView-categories but with a pre-defined list of keywords for IPTC. I'd like to stick to this standard-compliant method because my photos are used by different people with different software at different places.

The basic functionality is already in the program, I know, but I very much prefer the way Bridge handles it and don't like to rely on submenues for this.

Any possibility to see that in a future version?

Greetings
Malte

So you would not have a tree list like currently, right?

No, I think the point is about having the checkboxes as selectors, so you could select more than one keyword at a time.

If you look closely at the Bridge keyword list it is a tree like XnView's. It just doesn't show the indentation for subordinates.

Ok, will be added

Ok, but you can't have more than 3 levels of child, right?

Actually it appears that in Bridge there are only two levels: Keyword sets and Keywords.

One cannot subordinate keyword sets to each other (I tried).

Another cool thing I notice in Bridge is that the keyword sets themselves have check boxes. This is an easy way to apply a number of keywords/categories with one click...

Hey,

thanks for the reponses. Now, I am a bit confused: are there any other possibilites for adding IPTC-keywords to images than through the "Edit IPTC-data"-dialog? I recognized that I can assign XnView-categories with the help of that tree-list, but not the keywords itself?

My concern is that all my images are used on different systems and not everybody has XnView to use its categories. That forces me to apply the IPTC-keywords only, in order to grant everybody free access to the information.

I don't know if you got me right, my request is about having a possibility to easily assign the keywords, not categories. And, then, I consider the way Bridge handles it as intuitive and efficient, just like JohnFredC has described it.

Greetings
Malte

For e it seems that the categories added to picture using drag and drop are not IPTC categories. At least i saw nothing changng when i add the picture to a category in the IPTC data

Yepp, that's exactly what I'm talking about. I'd like to add the IPTC-data and not the XnView-categories.

Is there any possibility to implement this in the future?

Ok, for IPTC feywords&categories, so my question :-) is it useful to have more than 2 levels in DB categories??

From my point of view it should be OK.

Normally i have as an example

The category people and than a lot of different peoples as keywords like

mum, dad, aunt and so on.

So if i'm searching for a specific picture were my grandpa is shown i will search for the word grandpa in the search dialog property for the keywords.

Or if i'm looking for a picture with plants on i search for all pictures with plant in the category field.

Useful? Absolutely!

Necessary? Maybe not.

The appearance of the tree (indented or not) is not that important to me, though indentation would be preferable IMHO.

However, if I was using Bridge (I'm not) the 1-level hierarchy it offers would be a limitation.

Some additional thoughts on the support of IPTC tags

Post by svend » Wed Sep 26, 2007 4:27 am

Great program... thanks for putting all the hard work into this. I am moving over from Adobe Bridge, as I have found that program to be extremely buggy and awkward to use.

I have a few thoughts/suggestions... I did look through the suggestion list, so I believe these are not old news (at least I hope so :-). And I sure hope they are not already implemented (well... actually... :-).

I agree that it would be great to be able to have the categories in XnView be driven by the keywords stored in the IPTC tags. All my pictures have their "Keyword" tag set with metadata following the Bridge style (I hope I am describing this correctly):

- Individual values are separated by ;
- Hierarchies are defined by using |

I could see the extraction just add the tag values to the database of Xnview internal categories, and then allowing the hierarchical structuring of these tags (beyond what is in the tag info, as some folks may prefer not to include the whole path for the category), so I can have:

- People
- Familiy
- Mom
- Dad
- Friends
- Thomas Family
- Bob
- Mary

etc...

As for using categories to filter, it would be great to have the checkbox feature to filter pictures. The question is whether to and or to or the tags (I believe Elements does and and while Bridge does an or). I guess ideally that could be switchable.

To assign tags to particular pictures, I like the model where I can grab the category name and drag it on the picture.

One more suggestion... it would be great to have a choice of how many frames into the movie a thumbnail should go. Maybe something where a sub menu allows me to pick 1,2,5,10,20,30 seconds.

Being able to dock additional views on the information would be great. What I mean is that having a full display of all the IPCT tags on the side and having that updated as I click on different windows would make the interaction with these tags more direct (maybe I am just missing something here and this is already possible).

Thanks,
Sven

Hello all,
I also very much support the concept of

A. organize keywords in a hierarchical tree
(like xnview catagories already does)

B. assign keywords per drag'n'drop to images
(just drag the relevant node to the actual selected images)

C. writing the node-names of the assigned branch into the image(s) as iptc-keywords

Just to illustrate it a bit:

A.) the tree:

+ buildings
+ nature
---+ lanscapes
---+ flowers
-------+ sunflowers
+ people
---+ family
-------+ Michael Schumacher
-------+ Tim Mayer
---+ sport
-------+ formula1
-----------+ Michael Schumacher
-------+ soccer

B+C.) the workflow:
Just select all new images with family-members and drag the node onto the images. They get the iptc-keywords "poeple" and "family". Then select all images with Tim Mayer and drag the node, so these images get additionally the iptc-keyword "Tim Mayer".

D.) Benefits:
Now you are able to search hierachically in every iptc-capable application. For example to search for all family-menbers, or to search only for the sportsmen Michael Schumacher and not for the family-member M. Schumacher,...

It would also be possible to map the picture-rating into iptc-keywords in a similar way (keywords look like "1star", "2star", ...) . So you could use the rating also in other apps.

I already made a likely example under
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=13398.

In my oppinion it would be very usefull if such an concept could be implemented. What do you think?

greetings,
venturis
