combine images by adding/subtracting pixels

Hello,

I want to combine two 24bit BMP images and so add/subtract pixel intensities. Copy/paste just replaces pixels. Is that possible with Xnview 1.91.1

Or how can I alter only the alpha channel (after set to 32bit) and keep the RGB channels as they are. If I change the alpha channel to half opaque and then paste one over the other it should effectively combine instead of replace pixels. Right?
